ACID RAIN
1. Acid rain is rainfall created by pollution in the atmosphere. When the rainfall occurs, it almost always causes harm to the environment.
2. Acid rain is caused by the release of certain compounds into the air, including sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. These compounds mix and react with chemicals such as oxygen and water and form acid rain.
3. Acid rain can harm the environment by acidifying lakes and streams, which greatly affects the water life. It also causes damaged to tall trees and soil.
4. Acid rain makes buildings affected decay quicker in their materials and paints.
5. Acid rain has the most effect in areas where sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are present in the atmosphere. Some of these areas with high pollution are China, Europe and Russia.
6. In order to reduce acid rain, environmental programs are encouraging more efficient functioning in coal-burning power plants, more uses of alternative energy and the use of more environmentally-conscious vehicles.
7. www.epa.gov geography.about.com OZONE DEPLETION
1. Ozone is a toxic gas with powerful oxidizing properties.
2. Ozone is composed by oxygen affected by electricity or ultraviolet light. This created the chemical compound of O3
3. Ozone is present in the stratosphere of the Earth.
4. In the atmosphere, ozone works to absorb UV-B from the Sun.
5. Ozone depletion can cause harm to the health of humans, causing skin conditions and disease. Also, the increased level of UV-B resulting from ozone depletion harms many major world crops, as well as certain marine and domestic animal species.
6. Certain stratospheric phenomena and springtime polar tropospheric events can result in further depletion of the ozone layer.
7. When ozone becomes in contact with photocatalysts it is broken down and converts back to oxygen.
8. CFCs are man-made Chlorofluorocarbons that cause ozone depletion. They are found in common items such as

Acid rain is usually a result of human air pollution such as emissions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. These compounds react with those in the atmosphere causing acids to be produced and in turn causing precipitation to be acidic in nature. The negative impact of acid rain is evident in ecosystems. Acid rain changes the PH levels of rivers and lakes. Animals such as fish are very susceptible to changes in PH and therefore are unable to survive if the change is too drastic. Plankton and invertebrates are put even more at risk. Acid rain in water environments can also affect plant life. On land, acid rain damages forests in high altitudes and also lowers the fertility of soil as important nutrients and minerals are removed from it. These impacts on different aspects of the environment have a trickling down effect that negatively influence entire…

Pure water has a pH of 7.0 meaning in is neutral. Acid rain has a pH of 5.6 resulting it in being acidic. Acid rain forms when high rates of nitric acid (in a gas state) are in the atmosphere. Human activities are the main cause of acid rain. Due to human combustion from nuclear power plants, factories, volcanoes and car fuel release this nitric acid into the air, high rise winds carries the gas to many locations. This causes the increase of nitric oxide, and sulphur dioxide to increases in our atmosphere. As more and more toxic pollutants are released into the atmosphere the more acidic substances will become. When these chemicals react with oxygen, toxic pollutants are released causing rain and etc to become toxic. As precipitation occurs, the acid rain will be stored in clouds and precipitate down to earth’s…

Unpolluted rain is normally slightly acidic, with a pH of 5.6. Carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere dissolves to form carbonic acid. Acid rain is rain that has been made acidic by certain pollutants in the air. Acid rain is a type of acid deposition, which can appear in many forms. Wet deposition is rain, sleet, snow, or fog that has become more acidic than normal. Dry deposition is another form of acid deposition, and this is when gases and dust particles become acidic. Both wet and dry deposition can be carried by the wind, sometimes for very long distances. Acid deposition in wet and dry forms falls on buildings, cars, and trees and can make lakes acidic. Acid deposition in dry form can be inhaled by people and can cause health problems in some people.…

Through the advancement of technology, the issue of the air surrounding the earth might have been one of the most often matters to be brought up and discussed among scientists and engineers. Acid rain is one of the more serious environmental problems and it is closely related to the air pollution. Nowadays, it has affected large part of US, Europe and Canada. People start to be concerned about acid rain since it is getting worse in the passed years. The effect of the acid rain most often leads to another bad effect. For example, the acid rain will cause the lake and streams to be acidic. Thus, it will also affect the ecosystem inside the water.…

Acid rain is a result of air pollution. When any type of fuel is burnt, lots of different chemicals are produced. The smoke that comes from a fire or the fumes that come out of a car exhaust don't just contain the sooty grey particles that you can see - they also contains lots of invisible gases that can be even more harmful to our environment.…

Introduction- Acid rain is created when certain gases are mixed with atmospheric moisture to create precipitation that is more acidic. Naturally occurring sulfur and nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere can vary the acidity level in the rain. Acid rain falls in the forms of rain, sleet, snow, fog, gases, and particles. The pH scale is what classifies it and it follows a zero to fourteen scale and fourteen being most basic, seven being neutral, and zero being most acidic.…

Rainwater is naturally acidic with a pH of around 5.7. Acid rain can be defined by anthropogenic acidification caused by nitrogen compounds and sulfur dioxide, formed as particulate matter released in man-made products such as smoke stack emissions and automobiles. Environmentalists have grown more concerned about the effects of acid rain which contains lower than normal pH levels in water. The effects of the lowered pH as surface water streams into rivers and threatens aquatic species, disappearance of sensitive coral reefs, disrupts microorganisms and natural acid buffers in soil, weakens tree roots, causes leaf loss, and corrodes limestone and buildings.…

Rain is very important for life. All living things need water to live, even people. Rain brings us the water we need. But in many places in the world even where you live, rain has become a menace. Because of pollution in the air, acid gases from factories, cars and homes, the rain is becoming dangerous for the life of every living creature. This rain is known as 'acid rain'.…

Acid rain is a type of pollution that is becoming a major threat to our planet and is need of attention. Acid rain has significantly increased ever since the industrial revolution, and now around the world, countries like Russia, China, and those in Europe are facing increasing levels of acidity in their rain. Not only is it becoming more acidic but it is also spreading by the pumping of sulfuric gasses deeper into the atmosphere from of the use of taller smokestacks at factories, which were made to reduce acid rain in local areas. Acid rain, is basically any precipitation like rain, fog or snow that is abnormally acidic with a pH around 5 - 5.5. Although pure water has a pH of 7, unpolluted rainwater has a pH of 5.6 – 6 because of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reacting with the water and forming a weak carbonic acid. The acidity in the precipitations (rain, snow, fog) come from gasses released into the atmosphere by industrial factories, the combustion of fossil fuels, and even volcanoes. These gasses, sulfur dioxide and various nitrogen oxides, chemically react with the water vapors and oxygen in the atmosphere forming acidic vapors that will eventually rain back down on people, cities, and the environment.…
