Acne Prone Skin

Esthetics 2013

Ever since I was about 11, I've always had problems with acne. It used to be quite severe but the older I get the better it seems to be. I've tried probably hundreds of different products out there for acne and oily skin, and I probably have over 100 bottles of half used products. It sometimes confuses me why there are so many different products out there, but they all work differently and some just dont work at all. And how some 'amazing' products that 'work wonders' are the most damaging on your skin.

I still struggle with having oily skin and breakouts. Reading about it in class is really quite interesting because I can relate to a lot of it. I look at people differently now that I know of different skin disorders or nail disorders. Not in a bad way, but now that I know of all the different skin types and how to help, I analyze there skin while talking witht them. When I see people with severe acne or just acne in general I want to help and consult them, but I know I cant.
I did a lot of research online and found it interesting how ance is formed. When puberty hits, the body produces a high level of testosterone and androgen. These hormones stimulate sebaceous glands to enlarge and secrete more sebum. The sebum gets accumulated in the follicle, and moves up the hair shaft to the skin. A bacteria, know as Probionibacterium (please don't ask me how to pronounce that) acnes, live on the skin harmlessly but when an ideal environment is formed it grows. This bacteria grows in plugged follicles and feeds on sebum. So when the Sebum goes up the follicles, the bacteria mixes with sebum causing the hair follicles to get blocked. This blockage becomes a breading area for the bacteria, making acne. Acne usually stops forming in your early twenties, but sometimes it will last till your thirties. And what I thouhgt was really interesting was that many of

When a pore in your skin becomes clogged with oil and dead skin cells, bacteria may start to form and the hair follicle pore becomes inflamed. The inflammation goes into the dermis and looks red and swollen. This is the beginning of acne. Eventually, a lesion will form such as a pustule, cyst or papule. As the pore becomes swollen, it breaks and a rupture appears on the skin’s surface. This is a minor lesion and usually heals quickly. When the follicle pore breaks and the infected material goes into the dermis, it…

The fancy ingredients like Progenium XY technology, which added to the moisturizers do not work and little more increasing the price of the product. Theses expansive creams are replicated to your own kitchen with simple water and oil mix. “There are 3 groups of ingredients in moisturizing creams that is powerful chemicals, cooked and mashed up vegetable proteins and esoteric ingredients” (Goldacre, 2011, pp. 24-25). The powerful chemical is ineffective because they are at such a low concentration to eliminate chemical burn that they don’t even work. The eventual proteins do work but for the very short time until the ingredient is washed off the face. Esoteric ingredients tossed in that aid the companies in fooling their customers for example molecular components. “Goldacre sites in an example that salmon DNA being added into a cream is being useless because the skin does not absorb molecule as our DNA. Also, if we were to absorb salmon DNA, it would be ineffective because our DNA produces human cells and salmon DNA produces fish cell which is not useful for our body” (Goldacre, 2011, p.26). Many companies claim that moisturizing cream provide oxygen to your skin. Many of the creams contain hydrogen peroxides. In…

Current literature favors combination treatment plans over monotherapy. The first first-line therapy for acne vulgaris is topical retinoids and a topical antimicrobial agent, such as benzoyl peroxide. Topical retinoids are comedolytic and anti-inflammatory. It is important to note that since topical retinoids thin the stratum corneum, skin irritation, peeling, redness and sun sensitivity are common side effects. Benzoyl peroxide is effective against Propionibacterium acnes, decreasing colonization, and subsequent inflammation. Other topical antimicrobial medications can be given, such as clindamycin, but bacterial resistance may…

Ever since I was a young girl I’ve had an interest in skincare. Of course, I loved playing with makeup, but what I enjoyed most was the understanding of skin. Why does our skin react to certain things? How do we prevent the bad reactions from happening? Why does everyone’s skin react differently compared to each other? These were few of the endless questions I would inquire my mother about everyday. As always my mother never disappoints, and she always was able to answer every single question. Due to my mother’s knowledge of skincare, I was inspired to obtain the same knowledge for something I’m so passionate about.…

When I was just entering puberty, my face became infested with little red spots. Propionibacterium acnes is the little guy that makes those spots on our faces. While I remembered my hate for this bacteria, I thought about a lesson from biology class. There are a certain kind of viruses, bacteriophages, which kill bacteria. Upon realizing this I thought, “Why don’t we get those viruses to go kill our acne!”…

Atopic dermatitis is a common disorder not only found in the united states but also around the world. This disorder is not gender specific and affects boys, girls, men, and women alike. The disorder can appear at any age but is more likely to occur in infancy or childhood. It is thought that more than half of patients develop symptoms before their first birthday, and about two thirds before their fifth birthday. It is not very common to first show signs and symptoms of this disorder after people get into their thirties. Scientists believe this is because the disease was not genetically inherited by the person and rather the skin was exposed to harsh wet or dry conditions. It seems that climate may play a role in this condition, as people who live in places with extreme weather are more likely to develop this.…
