#5. Identify the principal agents who expose white collar crime in contemporary society. What factors motivate people to expose such crime, and what factors inhibit them from doing so? What specific policy measures can be adopted to encourage exposure of white collar crime?
Whistleblowers are the main principle agents who expose white collar crimes in contemporary society. They are the ones who tell someone in authority or the public that another person is being involved in illegal activities occurring in the work place. Illegal activities can include fraud, violations of rules, laws, and or procedures. A whistleblower may tell someone within their organization or someone in law enforcement.
In order to be a whistleblower according to federal authorities, the federal employee must believe that a law, rule, or regulation was broken. Whistleblowers are protected under law that they will not be retaliated against.
In my opinion whistleblowers are motivated by their own conscience. They are considered selfless people who expose these crimes for organizational accountability and public interest. However, they do not always expose the crimes. They fear that they would be considered “tattle tales”, and that they would only tell to have their fifteen minutes of fame. Also, they fear retaliation from inside the organization and outside of the organization.
To encourage exposure of white collar crimes companies may want to offer an award to people who give those tips of wrong doings and make sure the tips are kept confidential. Ethics Text
#6. How can corporations ensure that their employees behave ethically?
Corporations need to have an ethics policy in place. They should also have continuous training and offer seminars to deter unethical behavior. Training once a year isn’t going to help. Lifelong training is important. They should also let the expectations of violating the ethics
