THE EFFECT OF HAVING AN OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS (OFW) PARENT OF GRADE 9 STUDENTS OF DUPAX DEL NORTE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (MAIN CAMPUS) TO THEIR GENERAL PERCENTAGE AVERAGE (GPA)

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Many of Filipinos find difficulty in finding job in the Philippines and because of that, some Filipinos have to find a job in other countries that can give them a bigger and better income and more savings. Overseas employment gives opportunity to redefine life and the way of living. As an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), one of their sacrifices is to leave their families behind, thus depriving their family of their presence. To provide good education for their children is the main reason why Filipinos choose to work in abroad. Parental care and presence are great shapers of a child’s personality. The way they are brought up gives us a pattern on how they interact with other people and the way they deal with circumstances at hand. It is important for a child to have a parent by his/her side growing up. Parents are considered as the first teachers responsible for teaching them things they must learn in life. Parental care is undoubtedly important, but when one or both parent/s is/are away, there will surely be a reconfiguration and of the roles and lines of responsibilities.
There are certain risks and vulnerabilities that those children who was left behind would experience compared to other children who have their parents in their homes. Thus, greater attention should be provided to aid the emotional needs of the children and the psychological and social shocks that the OFW children may experience. As a child, parents help them in being responsible for their actions and studies and make them realize what they need to do. Children left behind are more prone to psychological and emotional stress, feelings of abandonment and low-self-esteem, all of which may cause damage to the child’s development and patterns of socialization. The absence of parents may also effect on one’s child study habit and the child’s focus in studying.
Student’s academic performance occupies a very important place in education as well as in the learning process. Students with OFW parents are oftentimes devoid of attention and proper guidance that only parents of intact families can provide. These are inconsistencies in imposing discipline and lack of moral support from both parents which affect the child’s social and emotional adjustment. Nowadays, many students are experiencing absence of both or either one of their parents. The researchers got interested in the students having parents working abroad because in today’s youth, children are left behind and the researchers want to know how does it affects the students’ academic performance. This study aims to determine the effect of having an OFW parent of Grade 9 students of Dupax del Norte National High School Main Campus to their GENERAL PERCENTAGE AVERAGE (GPA) .
