Action Research
TITLE OF RESEARCH: Improvement of the MPS in National Achievement Test (NAT) in Mathematics III of the Grade III pupils of Hayangon Primary School from 48.17 to 53.17.
TIMEFRAME: June 2011 to March, 2012
I. SITUATION:
For several years now the researcher have observed that the pupils in Grade III of Hayangon Primary School have been struggling in their performance in Math as indicated by the results of the yearly National Achievement Test (NAT). Poor performance is a problem manifested in various subject areas and more observable in Mathematics. In the previous years, a number of strategies and interventions were administered by the teacher to tackle the issue but only produced marginal positive result.
The teacher attributed this poor performance to several factors including but not limited to the pupils’ lack of study habits, poor home reinforcement and encouragement as well as poor diet and nutrition.
To assist pupils in increasing their Math MPS in the NAT, the teacher made this action research.
II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
To increase the MPS of pupils in the National Achievement Test (NAT) in Mathematics III from 48.17 to 53.17.
SPECIFIC QUESTIONS:
1. What interventions will be used to aid the pupils in increasing their MPS? 2. What will be the reaction of the pupils to the interventions given to them? 3. How effective are the interventions in increasing the pupils’ performance in Math?
III. GENERATION OF ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS:
1. Conduct review classes beyond official class hours, e.g. every afternoon or weekends 2. Feeding program
IV. PLAN OF ACTION:
A. OBJECTIVES: 1. To identify the interventions that will be used to aid the pupils in increasing their MPS. 2. To determine the reaction of the pupils to the interventions given to them. 3. To determine the effectiveness of the interventions in increasing the pupils’ performance in Math.
