Q1. Fill in the table below: (The table below is to help you in your brain-storming; you do not need to be specific or accurate at this stage, but try to think divergently.) (5 marks)

What do we know about this problem? (i.e. what information is given?)
What don’t we know about this problem? (i.e. what assumptions do we need to make?)
What do we need to find out? (i.e. what information do we need to solve/work out?)
· initial temperature is 100°C
· it takes 12 minutes for the stew to cool down from 100°C to 60°C
· the pot is well-stirred
· the pot is stirred occasionally
· room temperature is 25°C
· the temperature of the ice water is constant
· the time needed for the stew temperature to drop from 100°C to 25°C

Q2: Using Microsoft Excel,

(i) plot a graph of the temperature of the stew against the time that has elapsed (refer to pg. 1 of Appendix A [1]).

For graph of Temperature of stew against time elapsed, please refer to Appendix A

(ii) From the plot, suggest a possible relationship between temperature and time by choosing the most appropriate mathematical function (refer to Appendix B [1] where some basic functions are listed) that models the relationship.

Exponential Decay

(iii) Identify the variables of the function that you have selected to your problem construct. (15 marks)

= temperature (°C) = initial temperature (°C) = time elapsed (min) = constant

Q3: (i) Express the non-linear equation that you obtained from Q2 in linear form, stating the terms to be plotted on the vertical and horizontal axis (Show your workings clearly).

Vertical axis: Horizontal axis: Gradient: Vertical intercept:

(ii) Hence, by plotting a suitable straight line graph,

The purpose of this lab is to determine an accurate time when the ice completely melts and the water starts to boil. The problem is which type of temperature change will result from heating ice to liquid, then boil (steam)? What will happen to the water after the boil? I hypothesise the water heats ice to liquid and then goes to simmer and boil. The independent variable is the hot plate changed to a burner itself. The dependent variable is what we are measuring is the time.…
