After completing the assignment Essay 2.1 in Study and critical thinking skills in college, I re-thought the way that I study. Once I completed the assignment I approach class a lot differently than previously. I sort through important information and ask myself a question where he or she going with this is? I also try to make a connection with reading assignment and class lectures. Now, before class I read the next chapter in advance so that I may obtain a better understanding of what the instructor is trying to convey. And I try to see how each lecture relates to one another. Once I leave class I think about what I have learned and apply what I have learned in my other classes. I realize that this class is forming
the foundation to improve my critical thinking skills. Students must do more than just listen: They must read, write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems. In particular, students must engage in such higher-order thinking tasks as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This is the definition of an active learner.
To be an active learner one must be engaged and take part in the class as a whole in discussion, class assignment, written assignment and class participations I believe that I was a combination of both learning types. Now that I know I’m going strive to eliminate one and steer to only be an active learner. I was never a bad student once I begin getting serious about learning, but I wanted A’s and did not know how to earn them. Before classes started at ITT Technical this semester I took and class with Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (ACSS) which help me to define and understand what learning style were and why. Apply what I’m learning then and now I’m well on my way to better grades and understanding more of what I read. I can see now that just because I did not make A’s then I can’t make A’s now. One, because of my maturity now versus then. I believe this is my season!
I try to see how my instructor’s classes and lectures fit together and how they relate to one another; as I write discussion and essay papers and assignments. School is not just remembering but utilizing critical thinking skills. My first active- learning strategies I used was to get involved with the class, talk, ask a question, make comments. I read the next class material so I have some knowledge beforehand. I like for people to think I already know, but in reality I looked over the assignment in advance. Making comments in class helps me to know I understand what I’m reading and the class material. Using the things that I’m learning, and putting to them use shows up in my grades. I have many stories to tell. I’ve learned to talk on paper! Connecting with reading assignment and class lectures has made a big difference in my writing, grades and attitude. Now, before class I read the next chapter in advance so that I may obtain a better understanding of what the instructor is trying to convey.
