The first thing I would do is to re-assure the client that her feelings were understandable and that a treatment approach would help in resolving the issues experienced by the client. That is, I would affirm the aspect of hope to the client.…
This helps the client understand that their counsellor has received training in counselling. It will also enable the counsellor to explain exactly what a counsellors role is, i.e. to help [the client] to come to their own conclusions and not to offer sympathy and/or advice, as can be a popular misconception, and can put them at ease on issues of trust and confidentiality.…
As the counselor, we must show the client that we are there for them and not tell them what they should be doing or how they should handle a certain situation. In the future, I feel the counselor will be more supportive of the decisions his clients make. As a counselor, we may sometimes feel that the client should do something one way and try to push them towards it but in the end the client really does know what is best for them. There are so many people like Steve in The Hero’s Journey, who are told they will never be able to do something and they work hard, overcome every obstacle thrown their way and prove everyone wrong.…
The way the counsellor approaches the client in this infant stage is vital for the client to gain trust and has the willingness to open up in later sessions. Some clients may just rush into what is troubling them or say nothing, in both cases the counsellor will need to be patient, observe and listen to what is being said as there will be vital information given and without understanding this it could damage your relationship.…
This viewpoint was formed because there are individuals who seek help from professional counselors every day because they believe that these professionals can get them back of track with their lifestyle and overcome the struggles of hardship they have been facing. If this individual does not believe that the help they are getting from the professional is successful than it would seem that either the professional or the individual seeking help is not giving 100% effort on their part in order to get positive results. There are many different reasons an individual seeks therapy; it can be gambling problems, drug or alcohol addiction, abuse, health issues, family issues, or even death of a family member. A professional counselor needs to be prepared for any reason that a client may seek help from them and be ready and willing to offer them appropriate help of treatment.…
Hello, Jasman. Great initial post and I enjoyed reading it. Active listening is one of the most important aspects of communication. Listening makes our patients feel that their voice and concerns are heard. It is important to put ourselves in the person’s shoes. Writing skills is also essential in nursing. Nursing documentation provides a means of communication between members of the health team involved in the care of the patient. In nursing, concise, clear, and accurate documentation could protect us from many legal cases and in providing continuity of care. Thank you. Have a good day.…
When a person needs help or advice they sometimes seek the assistance of a counselor. Counselors use communication skills and their knowledge of psychology to assist their clients. There are many known psychotherapeutic approaches that are recognized and used by different counselors. Each counselor has their own style and incorporates their own personality into how they treat their patients. It is very important for counselors to be familiar with different approaches because each client is different therefore; responses are more effective with certain approaches.…
The job of the therapist is to help the client access those resources (Franklin C., 2002). They do this by asking numerous questions about the client, their lives, what they want differently, what is positive in their life right now, what is their perfect world and by asking the…
Do you believe it is ever appropriate to direct a couple in counseling, or do you see counseling as a process of facilitating the unique personal goals of a client? For instance, when it comes to financial counseling with a premarital couple, do you tell them how to manage finances the “right” way, or do you approach this in another manner?…
An important aspect of McMinn’s writing is that he points out the three roles that counselors hold simultaneously. First as counselors we become full participants in interpersonal interactions that happen during sessions. Second, counselor’s serve as observers that are carefully watching and evaluating what is going on in a relationship. And third, we engineer by becoming understanding and compassionate to the clients feelings (p. 60). McMinn says “The relationship we establish with clients is an important part of the healing process (p. 60)”. It is very important that as counselors we understand healthy boundaries when it comes to client-counselor relationships. There is danger when a client is over-reliant on their counselor as well as over-confidence. It is important to find a balance so that there are appropriate limitations all around which will avoid hurt and confusion.…
Child safety officers must communicate with individuals and families in crisis; good communication skills are essential to achieve the best possible outcomes within a range of challenging circumstances. Interpersonal skills of listening, questioning and feedback are crucial when working as a child safety officer as they allow the officer to clarify, gain knowledge and understand. Active listening allows the child safety officer to clarify the child’s needs with empathy; doing this builds a trusting relationship. The interpersonal skill of questioning further allows the child to gain knowledge, make decisions and effectively problem solve. Lastly, feedback allows the child safety officer to clarify understanding and encourage the child with…
The first thing a therapist should concern themselves with is building a relationship with a client. A great way to start doing this is by demonstrating genuineness. A therapist displays genuineness by showing their true selves by not hiding behind their professional stature (Allen 1994). In essence, the therapist is saying to the client, "Hey, look I have nothing to hide from you, what you see is what you get." In doing this, a client may become more comfortable with themselves and thus able to share sensitive information. In a way, the use of genuineness helps both the client and the therapist drop their preconceived roles. They are no longer interacting as a client and therapist, but are relating to each other as two human beings trying to connect. Once this occurs, a client is more likely to relax and be more open towards the therapist's questioning. This can benefit the effectiveness of therapy greatly by getting to the root of the…
Relational, analytical, critical, and task are the four listening styles that people resort to when they are actively listening. Most people resort to only one style at a time but some may resort to many different listening styles at once. Certain jobs such as social worker, teachers, people in the medical fields, and police officers must be able to use all the listening skills depending on the situation they are in at that moment. The reason for this is because they deal with multiple personalities and ways of communication. I do believe that I resort to multiple listening skills.…
In order for counselling to be effective and purposeful it must be conducted in an ethical way. The very act of seeking counselling predisposes that the seeker is vulnerable/troubled and needs assurance that the main focus of counselling will be their well-being and promote for them a greater sense of autonomy, and not to serve any other purpose. Therefore the foundation of good counselling must be an ethical relationship, hence the need for an ethical framework. As Tim Bond (2010) states:…
“The primary role of the counsellor is not one of merely using techniques. It is essentially an ethical task. Simply stated, it is to serve the clients best interests.”…
