In the article “Those Terrible First Few Minutes”, the authors explain how to develop a protocol with better tactical options for civilians. The protocol must first follow lockdown procedures, minimize target profile, and wait for the police to arrive. This article explains how protocols will differ according to the age of the students and also the different dynamics like school events. Most schools include a generic school shooting protocol but they should not confine themselves with a protocol that fits all incidents. The generic protocol first provides a detailed phone call to 911 dispatchers about the situation. Then students and staff must hide in classrooms and stay quiet. If students or staff is spotted by the attacker then they must…
In October 1997, I heard on the radio that Luke Woodham, a sixteenyear-old, had killed two classmates and wounded seven others in a school shooting in Pearl, Mississippi. In a note, Luke declared: “I am not insane. I am angry. I killed because people like me are mistreated every day.”1 He explained that he was tired of being called a “faggot”; he was additionally enraged that his girlfriend—whom he killed in the shooting—had broken up with him. At the start of the Woodham case, I began examining school shootings. Two months after the massacre in Mississippi came a shooting in Kentucky, then one in Arkansas that same month, and then another in Arkansas three months later in March 1998. There was a shooting in Pennsylvania that April, in Tennessee…
There were prominent warning signs even according to the shooter’s poetry professor Nikki Giovanni that caused her and her students fear to be around Cho (Roberts). When the first shooting occured campus authoritys gave no more thought into it other than it being a small domestic incident, leaving them to believe the gunman had left campus. A student Brant Martel felt that, “they were a little slow on their response.” (Questions…). Even a day after the shooting people like Kenneth Trump of National School and Safety Services acknowledge that there needed to be a plan implimented to deal with crisis situations like this one (Questions…). Students were disappointed of the lack of attention to the first shooting and the emails that were sent 2 hours later during the rest of the shootings (NBC). Since the shootings that happened in 2007, about two thirds of four year colleges with 2500 students have been supplied with dedicated police officers and security guards according to the Departmant of Justice (Rich). The Virginia Tech campus shootings changed the landscape of security on school campuses by forcing campuses to implement active shooter drills. text alerts for students,…
With recent events such as the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, there has been an increased focus on the role of EMS providers in an active shooter situation. Should EMS wait until the scene is deemed "safe" by law enforcement, or should providers be expected to enter a potentially dangerous scene where the shooter may still be active? It is an issue that has been debated on public forums all over the internet, with plenty of people of both sides of the argument. And while both sides of the argument have merits, I believe there is a solution that may allow victims of a shooting to receive quick and effective medical care without compromising the safety of those who provide it.…
On August 3, 2010, in Manchester, CT, a disgruntled employee shot and killed eight fellow workers and just over two years later a twenty-year-old male shot and killed twenty-six children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. The increasing frequency and complexities of these incidents demonstrate the need for all emergency agencies to collaborate and train for this sad new reality of society.…
Yes, Hazzard is effective for his audience because he is showing the truth about how the paramedics.…
In the Active shooter presentation, we went over what reality would be like if we had to encounter a shooter at our school. The officer showed live clips, had a power point presentation, and talked about how to deal with the situation. This set students into the realization that a shooting could happen anywhere, at anytime. It’s a matter that should be taken serious. This subject is something that most people tend to overlook. In the presentation, the live reenactment videos really showed us how easy it is for a shooter to get in, and how hard it is for the victim to get out.…
Spree Killings is when three or more killings happens’ without any cooling off period, this often happens at two or more locations. Though cases like the Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado in April 1999, where two teenage boys carried out shootings killing 12 students and one teacher as well as injuring 20 more students and ultimately leading up to the two boys own suicides and the end of the killing spree, was done at one location, the school. Even though there had been shootings at other schools prior to the Columbine shooting it was the…
A few things that to help prevent School Shootings but failed would be the zero tolerance policy. The zero tolerance policy is preventing drugs and weapons being brought onto school property. But many students get away with it because they bring weapons to school hidden in their backpacks without anyone noticing, then they cause a tragedy, “Schools are not safer, or more educational because of zero tolerance policies.”(Nick Gillespie 4). This policy doesn't change anything so why have this policy when no one notice who enters school with weapons. We need a stronger system to prevent this from happening.…
Effective communication is a key ingredient of our everyday lives; from parents telling their children what to do; to taking instructions from our bosses at work. Another key element in effective communication is being able to understand what is being asked of us. In many instances part of the message being conveyed is heard, which could affect the outcome of was actually instructed of one to complete. The instance of the Shooting at Columbine High reminds me of when you take ten people, you tell the first person to pass along a message and by the time you get to the tenth person the original message is so out of context that it unclear what was said to be passed.…
Erin has been shooting up meth, herioin, and pain pills for many many months. Her children were previously taken by Jason and Kristy Smith. Jason is the brother of Trey Smith, the father. Trey is currently in rehab for alcoholism. Erin agreed to allow Jason and Kristy take the children so that she could check herself into rehab and get better, which she did not do. She did supposedly get clean for a short time. Long enough for them to bring the children back. When this situation was first discovered, Erin's arms were covered in needle marks from top to bottom and the children had been found unattended numerous times, while Erin was "dope sick" in bed and the babies were not taken care of. At those times the babies were taken to a friends home to be cared for.…
In addition, having a greater number of weapons on campus would cause the number of accidental shootings to grow. Although training is required to obtain a license to carry a concealed handgun, some people are better trained than others. The law requires a waiting period before purchasing a handgun. Suppose an intruder armed with a rifle entered the crowded cafeteria at noon and began targeting students. If one-fourth of the people in the cafeteria carried a handgun and began to shoot back at the intruder, a great number of innocent people could be hit by mistake. Very often incidents such as the one described, people panic; a person attempting to aim at a gunman in order to protect self or…
With the proper training and education on firearms, students and professors would have the ability to neutralize a potential threat and have the ability to protect themselves and those around them. Understanding that it is the duty of law enforcement to protect all of our citizens, it has become very clear that they can not be everywhere and response time to a life threatening situation is not always ideal. Many argue that students and professors on college campuses should maintain focus on education and that allowing firearms on campuses may cause distractions.…
The sound of a gunshot, complimented by screams, everyone’s nightmare. To think this could be avoided is absurd, or is it? Millions of Americans ponder this thought; yet, no official outcome has been ratified. To come to a proper mutual agreement, time is no longer an obstacle. We as the people, have statistics of pro guns vs against guns to show the proper choice in each scenario. Some people believe guns on campus will cause an array of problems; however, with proper training and discipline, safety will become a concrete practice.…
The concern for the safety of your child in a college campus or university will most likely be your number one priority. In the case that you do not have a child and you are that person in the university, you might always want to watch your back. According to a “statistical analysis of more than three decades of data, in 2011 the United States entered a new period in which mass shootings are occurring more frequently.” (Cohen) Now off course, the research that has been done by Cohen includes mass shootings from ages varying from six to twenty-one years old although another article by the “EverytownResearch.org” website reveals how out of all of the school mass shootings in the United States, the majority of the mass shooting incidents that have happened in different colleges or universities. Because younger Ed campuses like elementary, middle and high schools are particularly small in comparison to the majority of all college campuses and universities, it is easier for security guards including school police to be in most places or get to a dangerous situation faster than in a higher Ed campus. A university…
