How Acupuncture Works
Acupuncture is based on the traditional Chinese medicine belief that the universe, and the body, is comprised of two opposing forces: yin and yang. When these forces are in balance, the body is healthy. When they are not, problems occur.
Acupuncture works in accordance with the belief
that energy, called “qi,” flows along specific pathways called meridians. This constant flow of energy keeps the body healthy and balanced. If the flow of energy becomes blocked, however, the disruption can lead to pain, illness and lack of function. Acupuncture aims to release the blockage and allow the qi to flow properly again. This proper flow can relieve the body of the pain and other unpleasant symptoms it experiences.
How Acupuncture is Practiced
Acupuncture helps the body to heal itself of its ailments. It does this by stimulating specific anatomic sites on the body called acupuncture points, or acupoints. These points are typically stimulated by inserting fine, sterilized needles into the skin on top of the points. When the points are effectively stimulated, the body’s natural healing properties are activated through various physiologic systems. The addition of massage, pressure, electronic stimulation and heat may also be used to enhance the effects.
Along with needles, acupuncture practitioners may use other methods of stimulation, including cupping, manual massage, heat therapy and the application of topical herbal medicines and linaments.
