First, patients may experience bruising or bleeding around the punctured area. Patients will experience this after the treatment because of the collection of blood when the needles are removed from the skin, sometimes it may result to hematoma – a collection of blood outside a blood vessel (Calabro, 2013). Nursingtimes.net (2009) mentioned that it might happen to those who are taking medication, which dilutes the blood (anti-coagulants). If a patient’s platelet amount is low due to chemotherapy or the cancer itself, it may result to bruising in the punctured area as well (Wong, 2012). According to Jayasuriya (2005), bleeding can be avoided by preventing any noticeable veins in the area, if bleeding happens, massage the area with a dry cotton swab and it will stop the bleeding and seal the wounds (p.73). Although, this treatment is safe for everyone, but an enormous study from Japan demonstrated that 65,000 patients who experienced acupuncture only few had problems (CRUK, n.d.).
