Incomplete Abortion
1. Definition:
• A pregnancy that is terminated, in which all products of the conception were not thoroughly expelled or removed
2. Causes/Contributing/Risk Factors:
• Drugs or Alcohol use
• Smoking
• In the mother a connection between severe systematic disease and incomplete abortion
• Genetic causes such as Trisomy Chromosome makes up 5% of all cases
• Anomalies of the uterine artery
• Endocrine factors
• Luteal phase insufficiency
• Infections
• 1st trimester molar pregnancy
• Risk factors
Remaining tissue can lead to uterine infection
Anemia
Over the age of 30
Abnormal pap smear
Hx of past miscarriages
3. S/S (maternal & fetal):
• Vaginal bleeding (ranging from light to moderate), bleeding could be extremely heavy and may require a blood transfusion

Labs to Monitor:
• CBC with Differential
• Blood type and Rh
• Qualitative and quantitative human chorionic gonadotropin-beta
5. Treatments/Precautions:
• Hemorrhage may require surgical evacuation by curettage, oxytocic, and blood replacement
• A medication by the name of Misoprostol, is sometimes given to empty out the uterus. It has the ability to induce contractions within the uterus and soften the cervix.
• Rho(D) immunoglobulin, which suppresses the immune system response and antibody formation
• Aggressive hydration, iron therapy, and also blood transfusions may be needed in extreme blood loss

• Encourage patient to bring/save passed tissue for examination
• Monitor bleeding
• Assess pain
