PSYC 322-C01 Stress As a twenty-six year old man who works two full time jobs in addition to being a full time student, stress is no stranger. Stress is something, which every person deals with everyday, in every aspect of his or her lives. Stress has been defined in a multitude of ways by countless of psychologists. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary(n. d.) ”Stress; a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.”. Stress can be defined psychologically as an unpleasant state of emotional and physiological arousal that people experience in situations that they perceive as dangerous or threatening to their well being (Tenibiaje2011). There are many different kinds of stress. The most common types of stress that are defined are acute stress, episodic acute stress, and chronic stress, and each of these different types of stress show their own symptoms. I have been dealing with stress for many years and not just from the typical college student response, “school”. Although something I had not even considered as a possibility was the positive coping mechanism, altering the stressor. Throughout my life I have been using mostly negative coping mechanisms as a way to deal with the stress I encounter. I took up smoking, and have been trying to quit for years, started drinking a lot, and took out my anger on the people in my life who were trying to help me.
