Debate Reflection “Critics claim that advertisement is propaganda, while advocates counter that advertising foster free trade and promotes prosperity.” On August 31st, the debate that advertisement is more destructive in today’s society than it is advantageous took place. My partner, Kayla, and I took the affirmative position that advertising is damaging, while our opponents, Katie and Kiersten, took the negative claim that advertising is necessary and prosperous.
Opening the debate, the affirmative made their constructive. The debater, I, made the five points that advertising is propaganda, advertisers are manipulative, people are easily persuaded, advertisements make us greedy, and that they make us feel obligated to do something. Though I planned on making one or two more points, I think I fulfilled the short two-minute time well, as I got my point across to the class and to the negative. Next, the negative made their constructive, and I believe they had a strong argument as well. Following this were the two 2-minute affirmative rebuttals and the one 1-minute negative rebuttal. Kayla and I made sure to note each of the negative points so that we could make sure either one of us could successfully cover it in the rebuttal. However, I do believe a weakness in our presentation was the splitting of presentation time between Kayla and me. When it was brought to our attention that one affirmative was to talk per rebuttal, we stumbled to get back on track, but I believe that we did so.
Becoming a better writer is always something to improve on and to stress. This debate has just this benefit. The ability to create a thesis and a strong argument with supporting points is key to both debating and writing certain types of documents. Also, taking into account the other argument and using rhetoric to make sense of it is important. With further experience, as well as watching others, I hope to improve my debating skills and writing
