“Billy stared into the patina of the corporal's boots, saw Adam and Eve in the golden depths.”(Chapter 2) This is a biblical allusion to Adam and Eve, the mother and father of humanity in the Judeo-Christian tradition. They symbolize a state of purity and the assured falling, which get them both kicked out of heaven. It is Billy’s fate to wander through time just as it is Adam and Eve’s fate to walk the

In Barbra Kinsolver’s novel, The Poisonwood Bible Kingolver uses biblical allusions to provide an in-depth analysis of a story, character, etc. For example, towards the beginning of the novel, Leah says that her "father was as tall as Goliath and pure of heart as David" (Kingsolver 49). After conducting research I found out that David was born in Bethlehem, and youngest son of Jesse at the age of 18. I don’t believe it to be a coincidence that Nathan was also born in Bethlehem, Georgia. When David was young he was a Shepherd; Leah also saw Nathan as a “shepherd” specifically while he was in Congo. Nathan also has red hair just like David, and he was strong just like David. When Leah mentions that Nathan “planned to make a demonstration garden” that they would feed the villagers she was alluding to the Garden of Eden (35-36). Nathan was acting as the shepherd that…

Throughout the series, Lewis uses aspects of the creation story, particularly the idea of animals, to attract a younger audience. Lewis creates an entire world where animals are personified to help children take an interest in and to connect with the characters (Brennan). Two major characters that act as large biblical allegories include Aslan and Reepicheep. Aslan is the “noble lion of Narnia,” and acts as a Christ figure. Lewis explains that if there were a world like Narnia, and the world were to become corrupt like Earth, Jesus would enter Narnia as a lion because He would want to fit into the world of talking beasts. This correlates with the idea that Jesus came to Earth as a man because he wanted to connect with the world of mankind (Lewis,…

Adam’s Rib, a 1949 film features Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn in a comedy with a twist where there almost seems to be an anticlimax. The main theme throughout the movie remains shedding light on gender inequality (which in the context of 1949 is very much relevant) as well as the importance of following the letter of law as these two appear seemingly conflicted in the beginning, but in the end it is established that the law should be unbiased and no one should have the right to injure/harm or do any act in furtherance of this. In this time, keeping the depiction in mind, there was no concept of grave and sudden provocation making the act culpable homicide not amounting to murder but, that the act in this case was either just an assault…

Billy Budd's innocence is eradicated at the hands of his depraved adversary, John Claggart, "much such as Adam presumably might have been ere the urbane Serpent wriggled himself into his company." As a youthful, handsome, and popular sailor, Billy Budd only wants to be liked and well-adjusted from a social standpoint. Claggart, on the other hand, full of deception, distrust, and malice, seems to destroy Billy Budd for no reason other than his innocence. Claggart takes a satanic role in that he tempts Billy Budd to commit the sin of rebellion. Claggart’s actions cause Billy Budd to fall from both social and moral grace by committing murder, and Billy Budd suffers death as a consequence. His white garb, and natural glowing of light makes his death seem symbolic for good. Claggart's death completely contrasts with the pure death of Billy Budd.…

Genesis chapter 3 is all about the fall of humans. It is the first sin that man ever committed. It all starts with the serpent tempting Eve to eat the fruit. The serpent twists God words to deceive Eve into thinking it is alright for her to eat the fruit. Once she does she gives it to her husband Adam and he also eats. When they ate the fruit, that is when they disobeyed God. God punishes them by banning them from the garden. Even though God banishes them from the garden, He still provides clothes for them to wear so they are not naked. To me, the theme of chapter 3 is although we sin, God overlooks that and provides and cares for us because he loves so much.…

Some may believe that gay marriage isn’t morally wrong; while mainly strong biblical based Christians (the opposing side) states it is; I am for the opposing side. The policy should not be changed in the states that are against gay marriage, and define marriage as between one man and one woman. In the other states and countries, the legalization of gay marriage still exists. Something should be done about this.…

Temptation has been around since the conception of our Earth. All civilizations, including the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, the British, and even modern day individuals, have fallen victim to temptations that the world offers. John Owen described temptation as “a knife, that may either cut the meat or the throat of a man; it may be his food or his poison, his exercise or destruction.” A temptation is an act that appears enticing to an individual, but is usually coupled with damaging implications that may lead to feelings of regret and remorse. A person may fall victim to temptation when he lacks the self control to avoid enticing situations and is persuaded by another individual to commit such an act.…

After the fall of Adam and Eve in the garden of enden God put enmity between the serpent and Eve. (Gen 3: verses14-16 KJV). Eve seed was cursed and now man is born with a innate nature. Innate Nature is both good and evil and depending how one is raised will reveal which nature will prevail. Children growing up dosing have to be taught how to steal, or be jealous or have hate for his brother. A good example of this was Cain and Able because of jealous Cain killed Abel (Genesis 4:8 KJV). As I think of today children at a young age they take things that don’t belong to then and lie about it. I see it all the time with my student. “Training up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart” hopefully this off set the innate evil with in. I know this for a fact because I was a child who developed into a young lady and ask God into life.…
