“The way records were sold was completely ridiculous. The covers were brown, tan or green paper; they were not in the least bit attractive, and lacked any form of sales appeal” – these are the words of Alex Steinweiss, the creator of album artwork, way back in 1939. Before Steinweiss’ revolutionary creation, there was quite simply no such thing as an album cover; vinyl recordings were available to buy in the back of appliance stores, where one would enquire for the particular title of a recording and were it in stock, would receive it in brown paper packaging, which was commonplace for all records at the time – possibly reflecting the fact that sales of records at this time in history were neither impressive or significant, instantly suggesting…

Franklin Delano Roosevelt book by Alan Brinkley is considered to be a brilliant biography of America’s thirty-second President. As he himself noted, “No president since the nation’s founding has done more to shape the character of American government” (p. 62). Indeed, the main aim of this short biography is to highlight Roosevelt’s greatness and guile that to most went unnoticed. As Brinkley claimed and most scholars agree, “No president since Lincoln has served through darker or more difficult times,” Roosevelt is recognized as a resilient President that led the country through the worst economic crisis in history (p. 98). In addition, Brinkley aims to provide a concise, but vivid narrative of Roosevelt’s character and notable achievements,…

Adam Shepard had $25 dollars and a dream and chris mccandless had nothing but himself and wanting to experience everything on his own. Upon Adam’s arrival in Charleston, with only $25, a sleeping bag, a duffel bag, and the clothes on his back , he makes his way to a homeless shelter in a rough part of town. The place looked neat enough from the outside, but it had dirty floors, unclean showers, bathrooms that appeared to have never been cleaned. Even worse, the homeless shelter is surrounded by drug use and other temptations, and dishonest employers are constantly getting workers from the shelter and employing them in very difficult, low-opportunity jobs. Chris Mccandless grows up in wealthy Virginia suburbs…

In my opinion, I think the essay “The Price We Pay” by Adam Mayblum was written extremely well because it contained a very personal and devastating experience in which the writer will never ever forget his long journey, as well as his co-workers long journey out of the North Tower of the World Trade Center before it collapsed. I felt the essay portrayed very descriptive scenes and events that took place on that day which made the reader want to read on. In addition, I felt that you could sense his compassion for his co-workers and his sense of duty to alert the firemen and women about people he left behind. Nonetheless, his story tells of events that took place inside the building while having no sense of what was actually occurring from…

The image "Rose and Driftwood" was photographed in 1932 in Adams' San Francisco home. His mother had picked him a beautiful pale pink rose from their garden. Adams immediately noticed the rose's beauty, and proceeded to think of a suitable background for a good composition. Adam's tried bowls, pillows, stacked books, everything he could think of but was unsuccessful. Adams then remembered he had this old weathered piece of wave-worn driftwood he found at a nearby beach. After finding his background, Adams knew just where to place his scene so as to achieve adequate light. Providing beautiful illumination, the north-light window in Adams' house would be perfect for the translucent petals of the rose. Adams took this picture using a 4X5-inch view camera and an 8-inch Zeiss Kodak Anastigmat lens. He also used Kodak film of a speed of ASA 50. He made 6 different exposures using different settings and bracketing. Adams came out with one successful image. He exposed the film for 5 seconds at f/45 to…
