In the movie adaptation of Macbeth, Scotland, PA, there were many changes implemented into the movie. One major change would be the lack of use of “witches” and prophecies. The movie’s “witches” are local hippies that Macbeth hallucinates throughout the story. They appear at random times throughout the movie and change its direction in a few short scenes. Although the witches and hippies interact with Macbeth in different ways, both the witches and the hippies play the same role in the story, that is to influence and change Macbeth’s actions.

The hippies first tell Macbeth's fortune, after he had been drinking in “The Witches Brew”. She tells Macbeth that she sees many of Macbeth’s ideas implemented at the restaurant, one of which being a drive thru window. This fortune gets Macbeth thinking about how he is treated at the restaurant. Macbeth believed that he had great ideas for the restaurant but that they were being ignored by his boss, Duncan. Macbeth is then left to think of how he would run the restaurant if he had owned it. Later Duncan calls Macbeth and his wife Pat to share “his ideas” for a drive thru at the restaurant. Macbeth’s thoughts began again in the direction that the hippies had pushed him. Macbeth and his wife wanted more, they wanted the restaurant and its fortune. Pat and Macbeth decided to come back to the restaurant after its closing to murder Duncan. Even with Pat’s enthusiasm and desire for more in life Macbeth still had reservations about the murder plan. While Macbeth was contemplating what to do he sees the three hippies in the restaurant. He is then startled by their appearance and accidently knocks into Duncan, who then falls face first into the fryer and dies immediately.
