“Adarna”
Adarna, adarna, adarna! The best play I have watched so far. It was the first time I watched a play in UP and also my first time to see Dulaang UP perform. Before I watch the play, many of my friends who were studying in UP said that, “The best ang Dulaang UP. Sobrang galing ng mga yan.” My expectations to the Dulaang UP were achieved because of what I saw. The actors and actresses who played a character in the Ibong Adarna were all very good and striking. I felt like I was part of the whole show as they performed.
The Ibong Adarna was said to be the most popular and favorite corrido of the Filipinos. The Ibong Adarna is also the legendary bird of Piedras Platas. The bird used to sing and after it sings, the bird will poop to her victim and the victim will turn to become a stone. The play was based on the “Corrido at Buhay nang Pinagdaanan nang Tatlong Pricipeng Anak nang Haring Fernando at nang Reina Valeriana sa Cahariang Berbania”. The Adarna is believed by the people in Berbania to cure the illness of the three princes’ father. The Ibong Adarna in the play was performed by seven singing actresses to show the seven colors of the bird. Each singing girl is representing one color of the Ibong Adarna. There were also multiple actors who played the role of one character in the story for a smooth and continuous presentation. The play was really entertaining because the story had some twists and turns to make it more fun to watch. There were effects shown during the play to help the people understand more and get along with the story. What did also keep the audience’s attention was how the tropes and clichés were rendered with clever hand tricks and cut-out papers.
During my first year in high school, we were able to tackle the story of Ibong Adarna in our Filipino class. As we discuss different chapters of the story, we are imagining the story in our minds only. But to
