Jim Steven’s poem “Schizophrenia” depicts a story of immense loss and hopelessness that overcomes many homes. It is all too ordinary to hear about a father abandoning his family, a mother who is broken and feels defeated, and the children who have suffer through it all in fear and the overwhelming feeling of abandonment. Feelings such as those found in the preceding sentence are found throughout Jim Steven’s poem “Schizophrenia”. The poem reflects the conflicts that occur within the house. However, the crisis that is occurring within the family is addressed indirectly rather than directly, it is addressed through personifying the house. By personifying the house in every facet, “Schizophrenia” reveals the reality of the family’s relationships, or lack thereof.…

Many nations throughout history have admired the wealth and democratic freedoms that individuals have in America. This admiration stems from the special nature of our population, choice of religious beliefs, racial mix of people, and cultural that makes this nation a melting pot. African American culture is one of several nationalities that make America special. Without African Americans contributions this nation would not be as great of a country. Even though we continue to face racial division in the United States, African Americans within that last 40 years have contributed positively to political issues as well as educational influence. This essay will explore the lives of…
The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, shows how intolerance can corrupt a theocratic society. In The Crucible, this is achieved by a combination of three chief contributors. The paradox mentioned in his introduction to Act I, was and is entirely true in regard to the conflicting nature of the theocratic system and the human condition. First and foremost, conformity and forced control destroy the sense of trust between villagers. Secondly, intolerant attitudes ruin all creative thought and new ideas, which could have possibly freed Salem from its twisted thinking. Finally the Puritans created the same form of oppressive government they ran away from England during the 1620s.…
Viola Frey was an American ceramics artist who was known first and foremost for her larger than life sculptures. Viola’s purpose behind these giant figures was to show the world (mainly the art world) that there was more to sculpting clay than small figures, bowls, and cups. In the 1960s and 70s a group of artists, including Viola Frey, wanted to create ceramics as a effective form of art. This movement was called the “Revolution in Clay”. Before this movement the standard of the art of clay was revolved around smaller scale pieces and objects like bowls, vases, and cups. This “standard” left the ceramics division of art in the dark, and it wasn’t something that people wanted to get into because it didn’t seem too challenging or exciting. The people involved in this revolution used different ways to overcome this expectation or standard. They began using new techniques in order to push the typical size scale of sculptures up. They discovered new methods for constructing, firing, and glazing that changed the department of ceramics completely. For example, Viola Frey, along with the other artist that changed the department of ceramics, introduced the idea of building in pieces and using a scaffold on the inside of the figure to hold the entire piece together. Frey struggled when it came to making her pieces because she was old and had some physical limitations. Her assistant of 17 years, Sam Perry, helped her put her crazy ideas together and help the construction process when she couldn’t do it. Her physical limitations were never an excuse for her not being able to build these larger than life sculptures. Her time spent in her studio when she was busy coming up with new ideas and constructing her pieces helped her forget about her physical setbacks, and kept her chugging along. Frey’s sculptures exceeded the size expectations in the clay world. Each of her pieces stood no shorter than 10 feet tall and weighed thousands of pounds. In order to build her figures, Frey…

“The mythic origin of ‘the country we now know as the United States’ is at Plymouth Rock, and the year is 1620.” James W. Loewen stresses this origin as mythic due to the fact that for thousands of years humans had inhabited the land now known as America. Loewen goes on to describe the horrors the native peoples of America went through due to the diseases and other such terrible things the white “settlers” brought to the “New World.” However, it is barely mentioned in Loewen’s book, The Lies My Teacher Told Me, that the Separatists were acting upon a word of God, or Manifest Destiny. If Manifest Destiny were taken into account more, one would be able to provide a legitimate argument in favor of the Pilgrims’ intent. (Loewen, 77) The Separatists were members of a radical religious movement in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. William Brewster, in 1606, led a portion of this group to Leiden, the Netherlands, to avoid further religious oppression from the English government. Some members of this Separatist group then voted, ten years later, to relocate to America. In order for them to afford such a journey, the Separatists received funding from a group of London investors, in return for produce fro…
Elliott is an only child who experienced intense personal conflict as a child. Elliott was the victim of sexual abuse by an older cousin when she was eight years old, and she frequently witnessed her father physically abusing her mother. She recalled to Entertainment Weekly 's Rob Brunner: "I never wanted to go stay at my friends' houses because I always thought my father would beat my mother up or kill her or something." In spite of such traumatic events, Elliott has recalled lighter moments as a music-obsessed youngster. She remembers shutting herself in her room and pretending to be a superstar singer. She told Kevin Chappell of Ebony: "When I was four, I used to sing to my doll babies.…
