The School Uniform Question
Individualism is a fundamental value in the United States. All Americans believe in the right to express their own opinion without fear of punishment. This value, however, is coming under fire in an unlikely place - the public school classroom. The issue is school uniforms. Should public school students be allowed to make individual decisions about clothing, or should all students be required to wear a uniform? School uniforms are the better choice for three reasons.

First, wearing school uniforms would help make students’ lives simpler. They would no longer have to decide what to wear every morning, sometimes trying on outfit after outfit in an effort to choose. Uniforms would not only save time but also would eliminate the stress often associated with this chore.

Second, school uniforms influence students to act responsibly in groups and as individuals. Uniforms give students the message that school is a special place for learning. In addition, uniforms create a feeling of unity among students. For example, when students do something as a group, such as attend meetings in the auditorium or eat lunch in the cafeteria, the fact that they all wear the same uniform would create a sense of community. Even more important, statistics show the positive effects that school uniforms have on violence and truancy. According to a recent survey in Hillsborough County, Florida, incidents of school violence dropped by 50 per cent, attendance and test scores improved, and student suspensions declined approximately 30 per cent after school uniforms were introduced.

Finally, school uniforms would help make all the students feel equal. People’s standards of living differ greatly, and some people are well-off while others are not. People sometimes forget that school is a place to get education, not to promote a “fashion show.” Implementing mandatory school uniforms would make all the students look the same regardless of their financial status. School uniforms would promote pride and help to raise the self-esteem of students who cannot afford to wear stylish clothing.

Opponents of mandatory uniforms say that students who wear school uniforms cannot express their individuality. This point has some merit on the surface. However, as stated previously, school is a place to learn, not to flaunt wealth and fashion. Society must decide if individual expression through clothing is more valuable than improved educational performance. It is important to remember that school uniforms would be worn only during school hours. Students can express their individuality in the way they dress outside of the classroom.

There’s been a lot of controversy on whether or not school uniforms should be a new school policy at many schools nationwide. Many people believe that school uniforms help students with their academic performance knowing that students will focus more on what they are learning than what they are wearing. Wearing uniforms will also help balance out judging other classmates on the clothes they wear and where they purchased them from. Other people have different thoughts on school uniforms and how they would affect their learning in a negative way. Many people think they have a negative impact on learning because a lot of their rights get taken away because they can’t express themselves and they have to be the same as everyone else. The price of school uniforms can get pretty pricy and when it come to people who aren't as privileged…

"Just slapping clothes on kids won't improve a school, but uniforms accompanied by other reforms can make a difference. Uniforms send a message and remind students that they are in school. One element of the message is that when you are going to school, that is your place of work. That is the place where you are working at getting smart." ~Joe Palumbo. Uniforms cause children to be more civilized and mature in what they are doing. It could lead the kids to a greater future and teach them to be more proper. It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because it provides more focus to learning, reduces peer pressure, and increases school pride.…

Students will be more comfortable with a dress code and still get to express themselves through fashion. In conclusion, school uniforms are not always beneficial. Children should have the right to appropriately dress for school. This right allows them to experiment with their creativity, imagination, and develop their personality. School should support diversity instead of equality by wearing the same outfit, because each and every student is different and unique. Diversity helps individuals to understand one another and helps spark interest. Clothing expresses a person’s rare personality and culture, it should be their right to show their peers their true…

Uniforms would create a more unified environment. Students would not be able to wear clothing that may offend other cultures, religions or people. Instead, students would have to wear the same thing which may give the children a sense of acceptance. Also, uniforms could solve the problem of judging people based on their clothing instead of their personality. Many students that go to a non-uniform school belong to cliques and those are generally based on popularity which is a concept of how rich or poor someone is.…

One reason this could be true is that school uniforms level the playing field between lower and higher class students. According to Procon.org, in cases where school uniforms were required, fighting incidents went down by a whopping 51%. School uniforms can also improve safety by making it easier to find students on school outings and harder to hide weapons or drugs. However, even if school uniforms can make schools safer, they can also cause students to rebel therefore counteracting the so-called safety…

School uniforms help improve students behavior in class because they are more focused and feel like they belong. For example students who wear uniforms will have better self-esteem. As stated “uniforms do eliminate competition, pressure and assaults perpetrated by older kids on younger students for their sneakers and possessions. They also help some students focus better In class” (Daniels 1). If lesser students are being picked on because of their clothes more students will have a lot of confidence with their classes. With uniforms students will feel like they belong in class. Also it is proven that less students drop out of school. To illustrate “ a study was released by the Harvard school of education research found that the Long Beach school district ,among six districts in the nations, 34 largest cities dramatically reduced their dropout rate”(Thompson 16). Given this fact lesser students will drop out of school. Thus proving that uniforms help students feel welcome in school. Lastly uniforms prepare students to learn. As stated “poise and students are more well behave when they are being dressed for the occasion of learning “ (Pros vs. Cons) . Students are dressed for success. Even though some students don’t like the policy of uniforms they still are ready to be successful. Therefore not only do uniforms help improve students behavior in class but also reduce school violence.…

Some parents feel that if public schools would enforce schools uniforms it would put a restriction on their child’s uniqueness or creativity. Although that argument is invalid, because wearing the same uniform would result in students expressing themselves through their personalities and attitude rather then pricey brand-named clothing that not every student can afford. Another argument that the individuals opposed to uniforms propose is that uniforms lack comfort. Parents say that the collared shirts can make some students itchy and that the pants sometimes don’t fit correctly so it makes the student uncomfortable, but others believe that most female students are uncomfortable wearing clothing that shows all their skin but do it because they crave attention and social acceptance. Uniforms would not cause students to be any more uncomfortable than they already…

Name brand clothing is better than school uniforms. “In many cases, clothing is an expression of ethnic identity or religious belief” (Forester, 2). Forster stated “Congress shall make no law respecting establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise, there or abridging the freedom of speech or the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (High cost).
