During February of my junior year, I was selected as an Oregon delegate to attend the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. I attended along with the first Hispanic District Attorney in the state of Oregon, John Haroldson. I was situated in the Sheraton Hotel, which was housing a number of the most powerful and prominent leaders in the Latino community. It was profoundly inspiring and motivational being able to take a glimpse of the adversity they were forced to overcome throughout their lives. Attending the workshops and listening to the groundbreaking stories of Latino senators, actors, and state governors allowed me to gain an intense feeling of motivation that is unattainable through knowledge offered at schools. From hearing Wilmer Valderrama taking pride in his culture regardless of the fame he attained as an actor; Antonio R. Villaraigosa being the mayor of LA through immense perseverance; and the group of young Mexican high school immigrants knocking the Massachusetts Institute of Technology out of a robotic competition.
