Light, Refraction and Lenses

Name:

Light Refraction
Read from Lesson 1 of the Refraction and Lenses chapter at The Physics Classroom: http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/refrn/u14l1a.html http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/refrn/u14l1b.html http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/refrn/u14l1c.html http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/refrn/u14l1f.html MOP Connection: 1. 2. Refraction and Lenses: sublevels 1 and 2 Write a one-word synonym for refraction. Refraction occurs when light crosses the boundary between one material and another material. What is the primary cause for this refracting of light upon crossing a boundary?

The diagram below shows the path of a light ray as it travels through air, across the air-water boundary, and through the water. Use the diagram to answer questions #3-#6. 3. On the diagram, label ... • the air-water boundary with a B • the normal line with an N • the incident ray with an I • the refracted ray with an R • the angle of incidence with a ! i • the angle of refraction with a ! r 4. How many media are there in this diagram? _____ Name them.

5.

What is meant by the term "medium" in this context?

6. 7.

Place a noticeable dot at the location where refraction of light takes place. For the three situations below, draw a normal line and measure and record the angles of incidence and the angles of refraction.

!i = !r = 8.

!i = !r =

!i = !r =

As light passes from one medium into another, it refracts. There is only one condition in which light will cross a boundary but not refract. State this condition.

List of materials: Optics Bench, equipped with laser and triangular like prism. First, we aligned the laser with the 0⁰ mark and the center of the prism so that the light hit the bottom of the prism in a perpendicular form. Second, we observed that the light did not refract when it entered the prism in the perpendicular form. Next we began turning the prism in 10⁰ increments clockwise and observing the changes while taking data. After turning the prism ten times we reset the optics bench to 0⁰ and began the 10⁰ increments again, this time counter clockwise. We recorded data and observed the refractions ten more times.…

Experiment to Verify Snell's Law of Refraction and to Estimate the Speed of Light inside a Transparent Plastic Block 1. Preparation: a) Read about refraction of waves and Snell's Law. b) Find the relation between the refractive index of a medium and the speed of light in that medium. c) Read about total internal reflection; especially the definition of the “critical angle of incidence”. 2. Using the special apparatus provided, measure the angles of refraction corresponding to a wide range of angles of incidence. Remember, the angles of incidence and refraction are always measured from a normal line.…

Now let's investigate the refraction of light by double concave lens. Suppose that several rays of light approach the lens; and suppose that these rays of light are travelling parallel to the principal axis. Upon reaching the front face of the lens, each ray of light will refract towards the normal to the surface. At this boundary, the light ray is passing from air into a more dense medium (usually plastic or glass). Since the light ray is passing from a medium in which it travels relatively fast (less optically dense) into a medium in which it travels relatively slow (more optically dense), it will bend towards the normal line. This is the FST principle of refraction. This is shown for two incident rays on the diagram below. Once the light ray refracts across the boundary and enters the lens, it travels in a straight line until it reaches the back face of the lens. At this boundary, each ray of light will refract away from the normal to the surface. Since the light ray is passing from a medium in which it travels relatively slow (more optically dense) to a medium in which it travels fast (less optically dense), it will bend away from the normal line. This is the SFA principle of refraction. These principles of refraction are identical to what was observed for the double convex lens above.…

The experiment set-up was simple to arrange. After we derived and got a better understanding of the theory and method of the diffraction grating from the professor, we placed the diffraction grating approximately 1 meter away from our screen. The light source was placed such that the light passes through the diffraction grating to project onto the screen. Now, we measured the distance from the first order maxima from the center order maxima. Similarly we measured distances of each color inside the first order maxima to the center maxima. This way, we would obtain the adjacent and opposite sides of our angle from the center to the respective order maxima. Recording all these distances as well as the grating constant, we continued to calculate wavelengths to match the figures given in advance.…

    Refraction through a Lens

REFRACTION THROUGH A LENS Lens: Lens is a transparent refracting medium bounded by two curved surface which are generally spherical. Types of lens: Generally there are two types of lens: 1. Convex lens: It is a lens which is thicker at the middle and thinner at the edges. It is also called converging lens as the light rays converges on passing through it at a point. Focal length of convex lens is taken as positive. 2. Concave lens: it is a lens which is thicker at the edges and thinner at the middle. It is also known as diverging lens as the ray of light on passing through it diverges at a point. The focal length of concave lens is taken as negative. Bi-convex/Bi-concave lens: The lens with both the surface convex or concave are termed as bi-convex and bi-concave lens respectively. A bi-convex or bi-concave lens has same radius of curvature for both the surfaces but the double convex or double concave lens may or may not have the same radius of curvature for both the surfaces. Action of lens as a set of prism: Convex as well as Concave lens is said to be made by the combination of prism and a glass slab. Convex lens in its upper part has a prism with its base downward and a prism in its lower part has its base upward. When the ray passes through this lens the upper prism bends the ray of light downward and the lower prism bends the ray of light upward that is towards the base of the prism. The central part which is a glass slab passes the incident ray undeviated. Thus the entire ray converges at a point.…
