Advanced Practice Nurses: A Case Study
Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) provide care in a variety of multicultural setting. In healthcare today, Adult- Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners (AGPCNP) must be aware of the various ethnic background and needs of their patients. AGPCNP are highly value in today’s society and a vital part of the interdisciplinary team. Due to the importance of the health of the patient, education, accreditation, certification, and licensure of an AGPCNP needs to be effectively aligned in order to warrant the safety of the patient while allowing access of patient care to the AGPCNP. Violation could include use of alcohol and drugs, allowing others to use license to practice, incompetent to perform quality care of an advanced practice nurse, suspension or disciplinary action of another license in another state, administering prescription to self or someone to obtain drugs, and practicing outside the scope of practice of an APN. South Carolina state laws and policies are proven to prevent APN from practicing to the potential of their education, training, and experience to provide quality care. Residents in South Carolina are placed at a halt in healthcare, which prevents several resident of South Carolina from accessing quality and affordable healthcare from AGPCNP. The road blocks that residents of South Carolina face are not just found in statutes and regulations, but also in the institutional policies that require a physician involvement or oversight in patient care. Joining a state organization that support the expanded scope of practice will help fund the fight to gain independence in the state of South Carolina. APN in South Carolina provide competent, safe care and still collaborate with other medical professional for the wellbeing of the patient they treat when needed. Regulatory policies are so diverse across the country that it will be critical to revise and standardize nursing scope of practice across the states.
