Custodial sentence should not be abolished
A custodial sentence is a judicial sentence imposing as a punishment, consisting of mandatory custody of the convict, either in prison or in the some other therapeutic or re(educational) institution such as reformatory, psychiatry or drug detoxification. The main reason why we strongly believe that the custodial sentence should not be abolished is that it serves as justice to the victim of the crimes. And what does justice really means by? Justice is defined as a judgment and punishment of a party who has allegedly wronged others. As Quoted by the renowned Martin Luther king, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. That is what the non-custodial sentence actually is, an injustice towards the victims by giving lenient sentence to the criminals. Justice is to be given to the victims and not to those criminals who were fully aware of its consequences. Besides, criminals know the consequences of their actions as they have a mind. Those factors are the protection of public, deterrence of crime and as punishment for criminals on their wrongdoings. The main focus about custodial sentence is about retribution towards the criminals.
The advantages of custodial sentences are that the criminal cannot commit so many crimes against the public at large and the purpose of public protection is thereby realized. Also criminals that have committed a serious offence such as rape, murder, manslaughter will be of the public awareness also the consequences bring in the idea of general deterrence in addition to individual deterrence. Some criminals may learn from their negligence therefore become better people when they have served their sentence. Custodial sentences include discretionary life sentences, which is an advantage because this type of sentence ensures criminals who have committed serious offences such as robbery, rape and manslaughter, are sentenced to life imprisonment.
