Not everyone who plays video games talks that much to other people. These people may be socially awkward. Video games can help children learn social skills. Tim Hodgson, the technologist, states, “Team-based games require communication to succeed. Not only do you need to understand the social language (each game has one), but you need to be an effective communicator. In the world of elite team gaming, communication is paramount and is finely honed after many hours of familiarity with other team players.” What Tim Hodgson stated was that when people play team-based games they have to communicate to succeed in the task. These games may include ‘Call of Duty’ and ‘Portal 2’. His statement was supported by Isabela Granic, Professor, and Chair of the Developmental Psychopathology department in the Behavioural Science Institute at Radboud University. She stated, “When people play multiplayer games like ‘World of Warcraft’ or ‘League of Legends’ they get better at communicating with their partners in battle. This helps them talk more to people that have played it before” First-person shooters are not the only games that help children learn social skills. Games like ‘Pokemon Go’ can also help children and teenagers learn social skills. This was stated by Los Angeles Times, “During the study scientists found that games like ‘Pokemon GO’ encourage gamers to leave their home and interact with other people.” What they were saying…

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a video game as “an electronic game played by means of images on a video screen and often emphasizing fast action.” While this is the extent of the physical aspect of video games, the gameplay and story telling portions are much more extensive and diverse. In order to tell different stories, creators had to create different genres, which led to different experiences for the vast population of video game players. Since these genres were created, and because video games are so immersive, people began playing video games more and more. As the number of video game players grew, people started to notice differences in the attributes of players. Studies began popping up that showed shocking results. These studies were showing that certain mental actions were enhanced in the brains of those who play video games. Their reaction time was quicker, their hand eye coordination was better, along with various other positive aspects. While people were making false claims about video games being bad for people, the studies were simply telling another…

Collaborative computer games can improve cooperation and prosocial content can affect measures of altruism (Rauterberg, 2004). It can also be argued that some children would be disinclined towards social interaction even without computers and tablets. These children may “find more honest and intimate human relationships with others on the Internet than in the real world, and they tend to successfully integrate these online relationships into their offline lives” (Rauterberg, 2004). Whether video gaming causes loneliness or contentment depends on the context of use; playing with strangers has shown to increase sadness and loneliness, but playing with friends or family enhances the player’s “sense of positive well-being” (Rosen et al.,…

When thinking about the effects of video games on America’s youth many negative aspects come immediately to mind such as aggression or attention deficit concerns. Mainly as result of mass media attention given to subjects such as law suits and violent crimes, these negative effects tend to take center stage. Is it possible that there are positive outcomes from the use of video games which are just as valid? Each type of game requires different skills if the player is to be successful; many involve problem solving, fast reflexes, coordination or social skills. While the foremost reason America’s youth participates in the activity of video gaming is purely entertainment, there are many positive skills and mentalities learned from this participation including coordination, spatial recognition, problem solving, teamwork and creativity. The best way to ensure a favorable effect on children from video games is to monitor the quality of the content.…

The impacts of video games, both positive and negative, have been the subject of many scientific research projects in the last few years. A large number of youths are playing increasingly violent video games. Researchers say that violent video games may contribute to a cold-hearted view and the desensitization to violence. In a 1982 Surgeon General report, concerns about video games were listed. It was feared that video games would cause teenagers to become less sensitive to the pain of others, make them more fearful of the world, and would cause them to behave more aggressively towards others. Another con of video games is the excessive playing of the games negatively affects the player’s education. Violence towards women, school shootings, and the increase in bullying are all a few of the supposed side effects of playing violent video games. Critics argue that violent games teach children that aggression is an acceptable way to solve conflicts.…
