~ Star Topology ~

• A star topology is the most common type of topology. Used in homes and offices. This type of topology is where all of the computers and devices on the network connect to a central device, thus forming a star. The central device that provides a common connection point for nods and on the network is called a hub.
• On a star network, if one of the node fails. Only that node is affected. The other nods continue to operate normally if the hub fails, however, the entire network is inoperable until the hub is repaired.

• Advantages of the star topology are ::
A star topology is very easy to manage because of its simplicity in functionality.
The problem can be easily located logically in a star topology and therefore is easy to troubleshoot too.
The star topology is simply in format so it is very easy to expand on a star topology.

• Disadvantages of the star topology are ::
The star topology is fully dependant on the hub and the entire working of the network depends on the hub or the switch.
If there are many nodes and the cable is long then the network may slow down.
Expensive as compared to other topologies.

• A star topology is best suited to be in small networks and work efficiently when there area limited number of nodes. And has to ensure that the hub or the central node is always working and extra security should be added to the hub at all times because it’s the heart of the network.

You are asked to design a network for a company fully occupying a three-story office building using a traditional star network topology. The equipment room, containing the company’s server, is located on the first floor and telecommunications rooms and distributed among each of the floors of the building. The shortest run between the equipment room and the telecommunications rooms is 200 meters. What type of network cable would you use to connect the telecommunications rooms to the equipment room and what type of media would you specify inside the cable? Since you are connecting a telecommunications room to an equipment room,…

The hierarchical star is the most common one used in modern networks. It allows many pieces of equipment to be connected to the network via a hub or more commonly a switch. It allows for one continuous connection from the telecom room to the user end equipment. If the cable fails it means only that piece connected will not be on the network and that only that cable need be replaced, leaving all other components connected to function normally. The biggest disadvantage to this type of network is that there is only a single point where all the cabling is terminated and if that piece, be it hub or switch, goes bad the entire network goes down, however once that piece is replaced it brings the entire network back up.…

This mesh type application of switches provides multiple paths for network traffic to flow. What this means is that if one link in the traffic flow or a switch goes down, traffic can continue to flow using an alternate path. This type of mesh interlinked switches uses Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to detect and prevent loops. A loop occurs when there are multiple active paths to the same switch and this causes the system to crash.…

Network topology refers to the physical layout of a network. The chosen layout directly impacts how each node on a given network communicates with another. There are multiple types of topologies that can be used based on the need of the project. The ultimate goal is to provide multiple lines of data communication which will increase fault tolerance on the network and reduce or eliminate a complete disruption of service.…

“A ring network is a network topology in which each node connects exactly to two other nodes, forming a single continual pathway for each node - a ring” (Conjecture Corporation, 2003). In a ring network data travels from each node to the other node/s with each node handling every packet. A ring network provides only a pathway between any two nodes at one time. Ring networks may be disrupted by the failure of a link. A node failure or cable break will isolate every node attached…

In this DB response I first will describe the configuration of the Hybrid Topologies. There are five different kinds of topologies. Witch type you use will depend on how much money you want to spend, how you want to set things up and how many CPUs you will be using on the network. It’s called hybrid topology because two different kind of wire network if needed, and can’t be set up by the conventional process. Setting up a hybrid topology has some good and bad perspectives. The good things are effectiveness, flexibility, it is reliable and scalable. Some of the bad things about the hybrid topology set up are, expensive infrastructure, and hub. Also it is a very complex way to set up a network.…

In this scenario I will be providing information associated with the creation of a WAN for ACME Manufacturing. This business has several locations spread out all over America and requires a WAN to connect their locations in America with their newly build plant in China. With the headquarters and engineering offices in Atlanta, which are right across the street from each other, the plan would make sense to connect all communication here. There are also distribution offices in New York, Chicago, and Phoenix which will have to be connected to this network to attend the weekly company meetings and have access to information stored at headquarters.…
