Everyday I wake up a white, heterosexual, Catholic female. These are aspects of my life that I do not normally think about because it will never change. I also did not realize the privileges and disadvantages that I have because of these factors. Prior to this assignment, I did not care to know about privilege and oppression. I knew it was there, I just did not think it would be that important to look at myself and how I am affected by it. Now, I see a different outlook.
Privilege

There are five categories that book discusses calling them the five faces of oppression: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence (cite, 35). Exploitation refers to the inequality of status, power, and wealth between men and women (cite, pp 37). It is no secret that men make more money than women even when they hold the same position. According to cite, marginalization is the most dangerous form of oppression. These social groups are not able to find employment easily, which causes severe material deprivation (cite). Powerlessness refers to having to take orders in the workplace and not having the right to give orders (cite, pp 42). Cultural imperialism is the dominant group’s understanding of society from experience and establishing it as the norm. Violence is the type of oppression where a group must fear random attacks. I never thought about all the types of oppression and how I could fit into them. I am a single mother of two boys; because I am a woman I could potentially make less than a man in the same position. Also, because of being a woman I have this fear of rape. Being a woman, puts me under two categories of oppression and I did not even realize
