Whilst I was at placement I have taken part in a lot of activities. Some of these have needed me to tell the children how to work safely. One of the activities that I had to do this was when they were using the scissors. I assisted in an activity where they had to make poppies.…
1. Judy is an older student who recently lost her job. She is attending college for the first time and is very nervous. She’s not sure if she made the right decision to attend but feels that it’s the only reasonable option she has. She is currently enrolled in a math course; she hasn’t had math for years. She is convinced that she’s not going to pass the course. She just wants someone to discuss some of her concerns regarding math, but doesn’t want to meet with the instructor. This week's readings involved introductions to problems faced by the Chicano community. It depicts how far back these cultural problems have arose and how the community continues to struggle and overcome it. For example, in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, it is a historical document stating peace, friendship, limits, and settlement for the people of Mexico and the United States. This treaty was drafted in 1848, which ended the Mexican-American War, in hopes for a better relationship between the two countries. In contrast, in the poem, I am Joaquin, the poet brings light how the treaty is broken and how the Chicano people and all people represented in the poem are oppressed socially, economically, culturally, and politically, by the "Gabachos".…
This was a great experience. The think I disliked about this job shadow was watching them insert birth control. I did not like the smell or anything about it. But as Ruiter said “It takes time getting used to the smell and not letting it bother you.” I learned a lot about the different kinds of birth control and birthing methods during my shadow. “So much of what we do and see is beautiful and magical. Part of our job is hilarious and gross, and another part is borderline unbearable and heartbreaking” (A day in the life of A Labor and Delivery nurse…
For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…
As I grew up, she also brought me to work with her and I befriended the majority of her coworkers and I specifically remember one named Donna. She and I used to talk and go room to room to see her patients. There I learned what to do and how to talk to patients as well as how to help them recover. I’d ask them questions about their current state of health even though I knew nothing about the human body. I always loved observing all of the nurses and their day-to-day work. Examining the interactions between nurses and patients, or even nurses themselves, had piqued my curiosity because I was astounded by how close the relationships were. This has since developed into a passion leading to a career goal.…

Sounds pretty similar to the agency I work for but it sounds like you had a lot more training then we did. Oddly, I was never asked or told to shadow anyone however, I did have a few nurses shadow me. I asked these nurses about it and they told me they weren’t getting paid for their time and I thought that was a little bizarre. I’m guessing that many agencies do not pay people for training after hearing your experience was similar to…

I enjoyed my time in that rotation very much, and I definitely believe I could work there. However, I would like to primarily care for the baby itself than for the mother. This rotation proved to be very important to be because I was not totally sure if I wanted to care for the mother in labor or for the baby. After spending two weeks there I was able to realize that caring for the baby is what I prefer. It will help me in the future by showing me the proper way to communicate to a mother about her child and of how to interact with other healthcare professioals. This roattion was honestly one of the best ones I have had so far, and it has definitely showed me that working in the medical field is what I would like to…
