What kind of family would want to leave behind everything, and move to a strange far away city, that they almost know nothing about? Now just hold on a second, it might seem cool to move to a new exciting place, but that’s not the case for the Rudkus household. To them, Jurgis, Ona, and Marija, it was indeed exciting moving to Chicago in the late 1800’s, to have a chance to. They soon find out that Chicago is making things hard to make a better living, than back in Lithuania were they used to live. The Book “The Jungle” was written by Upton Sinclair, it explained the critical conditions of meat packing plants. It was a fictional story used to open the eyes of the readers that ate the contaminated meat. Readers then became concerned with the sanitation and health troubles that they may be facing and that they will face. They then began to attack Theodore Roosevelt with letters, full of their concerns with the meat they consumed. Due to the public’s reaction to The Jungle Roosevelt then sent a social worker and a labor commissioner to visit the meat packing plants. After the book, The Jungle, was written and printed, Theodore Roosevelt was highly disturbed by what he had read, he then called up Congress to create a law beginning “The Pure…
Upton Sinclair was born on September 20, 1878, in Baltimore, Maryland, where his family had once belonged to the southern upper class but, at Sinclair’s birth, the family floated near poverty. Sinclair graduated from high school early and enrolled in the City College of New York at the age of fourteen, during his college years, Sinclair encountered socialist philosophy, and became an avid supporter of the Socialist Party. Sinclair published five books, he spent weeks in the city’s meatpacking plants, learning everything about the work itself, the lives of workers, and the business. Exotic Adventures Inc. is a company dedicated to provide customers with expedition style voyages. Their primary products are trips to the Polar Regions but because these are done just in the summer time, they also offer trips to the Amazon River during other times of the year. Voyages go from Brazil to Peru and are done during high water season. Suggestions from naturalists plus extensive research made them include trips to the Amazon during the low water season. Problems arouse when the company got informed by their Brazilian agents that the water level was too low to navigate while their Peruvian agents were stating everything was ok. At this point 52 passengers had already booked their trips and now EAI has to decide based on bias information to either cancel the trip or continue with it.…
For my verbal-visual collage, I chose to read the book The Monkeyface Chronicles by Richard Scarsbrook. Richard is a Canadian author who attended Western University where he earned an Honours BA in history. He also attended U of Ottawa and received his Bachelor of Education. Richard published his book the Monkeyface Chronicles in 2010. I chose to read this book for my project because it was recommended by the library staff at NT. Also, the novel won the Ontario Library Association’s White Pine Award in 2011. The White Pine Award is an annual literature award that has awarded young adult novels since 2002. Other books like Little Brother by Cory Doctorow and Mostly Happy by Pam Bustin have also received White Pine Awards.…
Sometimes in life when we have an experience that deeply affects us, it can change our whole perspective. The story “The Thing in the forest” is a example of how this can happen. The two main characters Penny and Primrose meet when they are children and share a horrific experience in the forest. Then by chance meet back at the scene and briefly reassure one another that what happened really did happen. But their contact ends there once again almost as if seeing each other was too uncomfortable. Then oddly enough both women end up going back to the forest looking for some kind of resolve. In “The Thing in the Forest” the two little girls encounter a terrifying creature that profoundly affects their sense of reality; this results in similar personal traits and shared sense of searching for what’s real despite that they never talk of it.…
The Jungle, written by: Upton Sinclair, looks under the microscope at the deplorable conditions under which the people who lived and worked at Chicago's Union Stockyards were subjected to. along with the impact those conditions had on an emigrant family from Eastern Europe. Its plot takes in the Packingtown district. During the early 20th Century the migration of European immigrants to America's Midwest was prolific. What they found was oppression, dehumanization and exploitation. Working the stockyards offered these immigrants a first glimpse at what the United States would eventually reveal. They were enticed by stories of wealth and opportunity and tired of the remnants of feudalism and classicism that existed in their homelands. The industrial revolution was still in its infancy and owners of large corporations thought themselves purveyors of the American ideal. Sinclair describes the brutal conditions that these immigrants found and the cold reality of life in the United States. This book reveals a look at an America that still has resonance today.…
As a child, I was raised my whole life in the country side. My mother and I had lived for years in a lonely shack at the edge of the small village we called home. At the very edge of the village was an eerie forest, a forest that seemed to beckon unwary fools into entering it. I was always told as a child to never go near the forest, especially at night. Some people say that a bear lives there, while others say that a serial killer lives there, and some even say that a monster lives there, either way the forest is always portrayed with death. I remember various occasions in which I would wake up for reasons unknown, only to find myself outside in my backyard staring at the edge of the forest, the soft moonlight caressing my bare skin, the crisp night air followed by the refreshing scent of grass. On one occasion I thought I heard a…
The American Dream has been a great symbol for hope in the better for the immigrants presented by the author, Upton Sinclair. Upton Sinclair in the book, The Jungle, argued that the meatpacking industry in Packingtown had caused so many deaths, injuries, and corruptions which weakened the American Dream. Sinclair supported his argument by demonstrating the poor conditions of an immigrant couple, Jurgis and Ona, and their immigrant family through the use of pathos to bring out emotion of the evils of Packingtown, words to bring emphasis to the claim of the story, and symbolism to bring out the meaning of the title. Sinclair’s purpose was to argue that socialism was the best remedy for the corruptions that occurred in Packingtown in order to…
This jungle was described as this nice, beautiful place, I would say, that had lots of fruits(William Golding 9), and animals and available drinking water to the point where if the boys needed any of these things all they had to do was look around and search they could find it with little to no work at all. This was a perfect sinless place where little to no man has been before loaded with opportunity.…
