Standing opposed to many other fields of work, the fields housing current popular culture personas tend to have a higher concentration of peoples that originated from a lower socioeconomic class. Often these people have grown up facing adversities, including, but without doubt not limited to, severe poverty, abuse, and a lack of education. These sufferings, however horrible, have made some great where, in normal circumstances, they would have simply survived, living life in anonymity. Oprah Winfrey is an example of someone who came from brutal roots to shine in her choice line of work. Winfrey, born to a teenage mother, grew up through her early life with acutely lacking education, and was sexually abused multiple times before she was even a teenager. She suffered through these horrendous experiences, committing to overcome them and not allow them to define her. Winfrey, through a struggle she was forced to become accustomed to, eventually became the host of her own show that won multiple Emmy awards, as well as the author of multiple hit books. It is competition to its highest degree and has been ever since the first sports emerged. But with competition comes stress and doubt and most of all a need to be the best. When factors such as these align with the strong adversity felt in something such as world champion level sports, sometimes it can become too much. Sometimes it can break someone down to their basest self, leaving only the worst of what they once were. Although that does not always happen, it is not uncommon in the world of professional sports. One such famous person is Lance Armstrong, a man who was an outstanding cyclist, possibly one of the best of his time; however, he is no longer viewed as such because he was broken by his adversities. When he stood to be tested he collapsed under the pressure. Due to his need, not to be one of the best but, to be the best, he employed deceit and dishonesty, in the form of blood doping as well as steroids. A great cyclist before these doings, he will most likely never be viewed that way again. This is because he, as some do, did not persevere under the pressure and adversity, but instead let it encompass them, even turning meaningless the talent for his sport that he once

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

During hard times and challenges in a lifetime, one may discover hidden talents or skills that were once invisible to their eyes. From the ancient Roman poet, Horace, he states “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Many famous scientists, movie stars, singers, etc. grew up from poor environments, having no education, clothing, food, and/or shelter. They came from a poor background which has only motivated and encouraged these determined individuals. Although it may appear to most people that those who experience misfortune not necessarily realize or find their concealed capability, it is emerged as true that many do find their unknown gift through adversity, whether if it is through their own hard work and determination or just pure luck.…

Horace, the Roman poet, once said that adversity brings out talents within an individual that otherwise would remain undiscovered. This is a very true statement, although only to an extent. Those who have talents that shine through are those that had an escape method, a way of getting out of their situations. Those who do not have a way out, and do not have hope, are at too much of a disadvantage and do not have talents that shine through, as they are constantly at battle fighting the odds that they are up against.…

Oprah Winfrey was born on a small farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29th, 1954, and life was immediately rough for her. Her grandmother raised her for the first six years of her life, while her teenage mother was looking for work up north. Whilst living with her grandma, it was very primitive and poverty was a normality. She would often wear clothes made of potato sacks and garbage bags, having kids in the neighborhood laugh at her constantly. Her only friends at the time were the animals on the farm, but that didn’t stop her, as she would dress them up and have tea parties with them. Albeit she didn’t have an ideal upbringing, she was able to get by with her grandmother by her side. Oprah was taught how to read very early and by the time she was three years old, she was already singing bible verses in church.…

Oprah’s claim to fame did not come easily. It was in fact a very difficult trip up the ladder of success for Winfrey. She grew up in Kosciusko, Mississippi (Waldron 13). Oprah’s troubled life began almost as soon as she was born, as her parents were unmarried teens and were stricken with poverty. However, the unfortunate circumstances did not stop there; Oprah was also the target of numerous cases of sexual mistreatment and assault, by male relatives (Waldron 28). However, these hardships and unfortunate situations only made Oprah stronger.…

Adversity plays a major role in developing and shaping a person’s character. I have found that this is not only a common theme in stories but also in real life as well. In the words of the Roman poet Horace: “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” This is repetitive in human history, today as well as hundreds of years ago. In a civilization, the upper class of a community would have different values than the lower class due to the social and economic differences that create a divide between them.…

Oprah Winfrey, for one, grew up in an abusive household where male relatives of hers would repeatedly molest her, which took an emotional toll on Oprah. She was an unsettled teenager who appeared to have no future ahead of her, considering the cruelty and harm she had undergone. After Oprah moved to Nashville to live with her father, where she could have easily been absorbed in the same life style she perused in New York, constantly surrounding herself with promiscuous behavior. Instead, she cleaned up her act and won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant, got an on-air job at WVOL, and also won a full scholarship to Tennessee State University. From there she continued her career as a radio newscaster, and eventually had her own radio show. With continued persistence, Oprah gained her own television talk show and is now the highest-paid performer on television. Oprah’s ambition was what drove her to continue her fight through her hard childhood, and make a positive, healthy life for herself. If Oprah lacked the ambitious qualities that she had and gave up, she would likely be trapped as a damaged and troubled woman who let her past experience define who she…

First and foremost, it is an undeniable truth that celebrities extend an influence on us. According to Singapore’s local publication, The Straits Times, 80% of the population refers to celebrities when choosing how to dress or deciding what to purchase. This is solely based on what we see them being photographed in, in the media. In fact, celebrities undertake more than this, often utilizing their prevalent positions to instill healthy and beneficial change within our society. Take Oprah Winfrey as a classic example. She is an inspiration to young girls and women hailing from diverse backgrounds, across continents. Oprah has achieved more than influencing and inspiring others. She and her team successfully highlighted the issue of domestic violence, sexual abuse and racial segregation. Besides, in 2007, Winfrey started the ‘Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls’ in South Africa to promote the importance of education for under-privileged girls. Oprah is without a doubt, one of the greatest, and most sincere and genuine philanthropists in today’s society.…

Oprah has used her power and wealth to change the lives of people around the world. Winfrey has helped children in South Africa and in the U.S. have a better education and home. Through her talk show, Oprah has also helped people open up about their past and share their opinions on personal and serious topics. Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29th, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Oprah was a troubled child when she was younger. She was sexually abused by family friends. “She skipped school, dated many boys, and stole from her mother’s purse. She ran away from home more than once. (Katherine Krohn)”. At a young age, Oprah moved around many times to houses of other relatives. In addition to this already hard life, Oprah became pregnant at the age of fourteen. Somebody right now in a classroom, baseball park, football field, basketball court, or a workplace is secretly cheating to be one step ahead of his competition at all times. Some say it is the nature of competition that arises these cheaters, but others believe it is the enormous amount of pressure that is put on these athletes.
