Adversity: The Importance Of Divorce

Adversity is an unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune or stress. Everyone has adversities in their life. For me my adversity is my parents divorce. It was my freshman year of highschool. Everything changed. I knew something was different because my parents no longer talked to each other like they used to. They would get into arguments and no longer slept in the same room. When I realized my mom was sleeping downstairs I felt bad and immediately wanted to make sure she knew that she wasn’t alone and would always have me. Not long after my mom started sleeping downstairs she moved out and we lived with just our dad for a while. As time went on I would always question why they got divorced. Did they not love each other enough to work things out? Was it somehow my fault?
One thing I learned was how to be flexible. Kids don't have a say in their schedules, homes, and new stepparents and partners. I learned early on that it's crucial to adjust to new situations and sometimes, go with the flow if you can't do anything else. After my parents divorce my parents got a second job and we cut down on vacation and other activities. That’s when I learned what’s really important. Toys and trips are not as important as putting a roof over your head and surrounding yourself with people you love. Another thing I learned is happiness isn’t something that happens to you - you choose it. Overcoming this adversity took some time. However I would have never of overcame this adversity if I didn’t have the support of my family and friends. My family and friends were by my side every step of the way. Whether it was them trying to be my therapist or them trying to get my mind off of things. I am so blessed to have the friends and family I
