I can remember when I was younger, coming home from school into the house to change clothes and head back out the door to play. Any entertainment I received was what I experienced outside. When I came into the house, I was able to watch very little television. The most television I was able to watch was on Saturday mornings and it was cartoons. Today, the young and old come home and the first thing they do is turn on the television set. According to a survey done by Emory H. Woodard and Natalia Grindina, “on average, people are watching over 51 hours of television- that is five hours a day of TV on average for the last quarter of the year. Teenagers (12 to 17) spend 103 hours watching TV a month, whereas senior citizens (65 or older) spend 207 hours”(Media in the home) With the slumping economy, people are forced to stay at home to conserve resources. Although there are plenty of economical alternatives people could do, the world would much rather increase their television watching.…

Advertising is a tactic used to persuade future customers into buying a company’s products; although, there is much more behind a pretty television commercial or billboard poster. Flashy advertising has become the new norm that Americans have become, for a great majority, used to. Jib Fowles, an accredited author and professor, explains that there are 15 emotional appeals used to grab our attention in advertising; in addition to this, he goes on to write, “The average American is exposed to some 500 ads daily” (Fowles 1). Subconsciously, we are impacted by advertising for all sorts of mediums, from television all the way to direct mail. Video game companies market their products differently depending on…

Entertainment has provided society with an escape from reality, which at times may be very stressful and chaotic. The relaxation that entertainment provides is necessary for the overall well being of people. Peace and accord can be found through relaxation, and for many people this is achieved through entertainment. Some entertainment may be damaging to society because it is degrading, and lacks cultural enrichment. As a result, I qualify the assertion that entertainment has conquered reality. I agree in the sense that as the quality of entertainment has declined, so too has the richness of society. I disagree in the sense that entertainment provides society with a diversion from reality, which gives people a respite from the daily anxiety in peoples' lives.…

Switch on your television set at any time of the day, you are almost sure to find a reality show on some channel or the other. Chances are that you have watched at least one of these shows and have taken a fancy to following the minutiae of the contestants’ lives as they unfold on the small screen right in front of your eyes. What is it about these shows in which they take ordinary people like you and me, put them on TV, and expose every aspect of their lives? How is it, that by simply exposing a person’s life, producers of such shows are earning millions of dollars? In every show there is only one winner and the rest of the contestants go home usually empty handed, yet every time a new reality is being produced, people enthusiastically participate in it. Why do viewers find these shows so entertaining? What is it that keeps people hooked to watch a new episode week after week? My personal opinion is that Reality TV is so popular because of the curious audience interested in other people’s lives, and the huge margin of profit that these shows make.…
