Counselors understand the challenges of accepting gifts from clients and recognizing that in some cultures, small gifts are a token of respect and gratitude. I took a counseling course in my undergrad, and we were having a class discussion on ethics. The professor’s example was taking a client out for ice cream during a session, another example was receiving a gift from a client when they have been helped through a crisis, there were many examples, but those two stuck with me.
According to American Counseling Association (2014), “Counselors clearly explain to their clients, as part of the informed consent procedure, the benefits, limitations, and boundaries of the use of social media” (p. 18). I see advocacy in H.6.b Social Media as Part of Informed Consent code by knowing there is a barrier between the relationship when it comes to social media. It’s a small world, and my current counselor went to the same high school as me, so she knows people that I do, so we have mutual friends on social media.
