In the novel, Hans recalls how in WWI his life was spared from battle in France, but his friend Erik Vandenburg was not. For that purpose, he then lived the rest of his life in guilt, knowing how easily it could’ve been the reverse. Knowing the fact that Erik also was married, while he was not, further caused him more self-condemnation, which worsened when Hans attempted to find his family and found that Erik had a son. His immense sadness is conveyed after leaving the family; “‘you never told me,’ he said to a dead Erik Vandenburg and the Stuttgart skyline. ‘You never told me you had a son.’” (pg. 179, Zusak). Instead of becoming unhappy and despondent, Hans learns…

In the saga of people of Vatnsdal, King Harald Fairhair is called the greatest of all the old kings of Scandinavia, establishing complete peace and stability. Also creating a marriage for Ingimund and Vigdis, which are the ancestors of the majority of the Saga. Whereas King Harald in Egil's saga is full animosity towards the main characters in the saga. This might because in the Egil's saga was all about the colonization of Iceland, and King Harald represented Norway and it’s over looming power over Iceland. In the Vatnsdal saga he is a main reason the family became so influential in the first place, the author owes its debt to the king and his family’s good…

The oldest known music or song of the Kuki community is the Ju-ne laa. Their style of singing and dancing developed much before they could identify themselves as Kukis. The Kuki cultural identity is much older than their ethnic identity, inscribed upon them by the Colonials. Their rich cultural heritage, customs, and traditions manifested in their songs/poetry is very telling. The Ju-ne laa is an artwork pregnant with meanings whose reality cannot be grasped by simple manifestation. The primal Kukis used their songs as a way of presenting meanings, which nevertheless retained some of the enigmatic because of its indeterminacy. Along with this line, Gadamer argued that no meaning can be completely revealed as artwork can be repeatedly revisited.…

Adora Svitak says the world needs childish thinking. Childish thinking in her mind is bold ideas, wild creativity, and especially optimism. One thing we can learn from children is that anything is possible. In a kid’s world, anything is possible. Whereas as an adult we tend to place limitations on what we can do because it costs too much, it is too hard and hence it becomes impossible for us to do. Heaney In Beowulf

    • 363 Words

Heaney may embellish – thus, personalise/claim – the text through translation; however, this was not something which came naturally. Initially struggling to translate Beowulf, it was not until Heaney located the verb þolian (‘to suffer/endure’) – an Anglo-Saxon etymon of the Ulster verb thole bearing the same definition – within the text that he considered ‘Beowulf to be part of [his] voice-right’. This acknowledgement tying Ulster vernacular to Anglo-Saxon is playful, Heaney enacting the same compounding in ‘voice-right’ that is essential to Anglo-Saxon poetry. Yet the rendering of þolian and its cognates appears unsystematic. Not only does Heaney translate the noun ‘fyrenðearfe’ (‘dire distress/need’) as tholed in the half-line ‘[God] knew what [the Danes] had tholed’ (l.-14) – thus altering the word class from noun to verb to make the thole-ing more active – but, furthermore, þolian is not seen in the text here.…
