Affirmative action is something that helps people in minority groups and women, get some of the same jobs that white men would get. When affirmative action first came about, the country was very different. We have evolved as a society, but we still have not gone too far. We are a lot closer to the bad times than we think we are. There is a lot of controversy surrounding affirmative action, but I think the United States does still need it. There are definitely pros and cons to affirmative action, as there would be with any policy like that, but I still think that it is necessary. If the jobs that women and people of color are getting because of affirmative action are creative jobs, having people with different outlooks on life would be very useful. It would also be very beneficial in jobs that require problem solving. Some people might also call it reverse discrimination. They might think that qualified white men should get the job over less qualified people of color or women. As long as the person has enough qualification and can do the job though, it shouldn't matter that much. White men have so many opportunities in life that others do not, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal If they miss out on one job. Affirmative action could also be a determining factor in whether or not someone has an income, which could save that person and their family if they need money. If someone had to choose between their pride and food for their family, they would most likely choose their family.
