As a result of wealthy, individuals with affluenza are at an increased risk of depression and anxiety. Although affluenza affects both adults and children, researchers assert that the primary cause of affluenza in children is that parents do not allow the children to learn from the consequences of their actions. The adults tend to be a buffer between the children and their problems; therefore they do not learn the consequences for their actions. Prior to 2013, affluenza was a term that was relatively unknown to the American public and has become synonymous with the name Ethan Couch. The trail judge did not believe that affluenza was a valid defense in the trial and based Ethan’s sentencing on his age at the time of the incident. He was sentenced to 10 years probation. From an Alderian viewpoint, affluenza is similar to unconsciousness; which is when a person is unaware of what they are doing because the effects or results have not been explained properly to them (Corsini and Wedding, 2012).
