Affluenza Research Paper
Affluenza After considering the symptoms of affluenza, I can easily say that only one is true of me. The only one I agree with is that I am running out of room to store my stuff, so I do not have affluenza. Even though I am not infected with affluenza, there are a large number of people in developed countries who are. It can be a very bad thing to have, though there are some good aspects that should be considered. Anyone with affluenza, obviously, would have an overabundance of stuff building up. To some that may be bad, an unuseful pile of junk. That is a bad way to look at it. On the occasion that an unimportant pair of clothes is needed for a dirty activity, who would be more likely to have one? The person with affluenza of course.

Although the affluenza defense may seem like a distinctly modern phenomenon, its roots go way back into the past. Many wonder how affluenza will affect our society in the future. "Unfortunately, given the fact that this case was successful, it's more likely that more attorneys are going to pick it up and wave it as their banner," says Gary Buffon, a Jacksonville, Fla., psychologist, specializing in family wealth…

Americans will never be satisfied. An unfulfilled black hole of void echoes their stomach. Why does the nation think everything is a necessity? Socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity and gender play a huge influence on health status as it subconsciously influences the way physicians interacts with patients, the sort of treatment patients receive at hospitals, and how their health is overall based on how society influences them. The main trends noticed throughout time is that the lower your socioeconomic status is, the poorer your health status is; if you are African-American, Hispanics, etc… receive poorer treatments because of the stereotypes toward their ethnicity in society and because these races tend to have lower SES than other races; for gender, men tend to take on riskier careers in comparison to women so they tend to die earlier and visit the hospital more often while women tend to take better care of themselves and seek medical treatment more often than…

After retirement many elderly people reflect on their lives, they consider their social status, job, income and current health. Most would say they had a good life but none would ever question whether or not they deserved the life they had. The reason is that Americans have a meritocratic society in place that rewards for effort and ability. In other words, a person will get what they deserve as long as they work hard for it. According to Narmit Arora “we are the authors of our own destiny and whoever wins the race is morally deserving of the rewards they obtain- and on its flip side, that we morally deserve our failure, too”(Arora 88). This economic model advocates hardwork and justifies failures by having a person blame themselves for their…

hen talking about of simplicity according to Henry David Thoreau I remembered a book called Affluenza. The book presents the same idea of materialism in the form of shopping as a fever, and chronic congestion as hoarding items. Affluenza uses metaphors based on diseases to showcase individual’s obsessions with material gain. Thoreau in Walden, or Life in the Woods chapter 1, Economy talked about his experience of being in a cabin for two years and 2 months. He wrought about this detachment from the everyday life as a means to encourage the reader to reassess their lives. Seeing the replica of the cabin was shocking, by today’s standards the cabin would be the size of a normal bedroom. I agree that for the most part the goal of the chapter by…

Being Labeled as rich or poor is probably the worst thing in society because it shows people if you’re worth something or not. You get put down because of what people see you as, a rich person who is selfish, or a poor person who is worthless. Classism affects one's identity the most because it brings down their self-esteem, gratitude, and it makes people not be high-minded of them self.…
