African American Culture Analysis

Our society is set up and divided into a hierarchy that reflects income and the family you were born in to. When a culture distinguishes between a group, there will always be an overarching system that places some lower on the system than others. The idea of dividing a people based on factors such as these, supports Bourdieu’s claims and theories circling around the concept that, “power is culturally and symbolically created and constantly refined.” When there is a hierarchy, it leads to competition, so when there are different groups going against one another, we tend to separate ourselves with people with common characteristics and this eventually leads to prejudices and discrimination.

Alongside African Americans, you can find Native Americans at every status and income level in the United States. Today, Indians living on reservations are one of the most disadvantaged, and disregarded groups in society. They face exclusion, and look for their own purpose now stuck on a path between assimilation and pluralism. Even after facing years of Americanization, there are still tribes out there who have preserved a part of their traditional culture. They have also managed to retain their value systems, politics, and lifestyle patterns that survived military conquest and the way they are forced to live
Immigration from Japan has never been huge because they wish to preserve their own culture. Because of this, Japan is the most acculturated in America. They have the lowest number of members who can speak English. Compared to Japan and India, China has a large range of acculturation here. They have been a part of America almost since its colonization, and the Chinese represented a large portion of the work force towards the United States development with immigrants arriving on angel island during the gold rush, and China continues to help support our nation. Those whose ancestors remained in America have passed along high acculturation for Chinese Americans.
