In his book, “The Shame of the Nation”, Jonathan Kozol outlines core inequalities in the American educational system. According to Kozol although great steps were made in the 1960s and 1970s to integrate schools, by the end of the 1980s schools had begun to re-segregate. Before emancipation education for both enslaved and free African Americans had been prohibited by state law. Free public education for all regardless of race was the first legislation regarding education post-Civil War, this legislation changed the Mississippi Constitution in 1868. Free education was not actually free, education inequalities, underfunding of black schools, residual feelings of slaves are not smart enough to be educated, and most importantly the lack of commitment to fund black schools. “State Superintendent J. After the American Civil War more than just a divided nation needed to be reunited. The states of the Confederacy had been broken. The destruction of their economy was total. From the insolvency of their currency, to the decimation of so much of the white male population to the sudden loss of billions of dollars of property in the form of freedom for nearly 4 million African slaves. What is more is the ex-slaves faced what seemed like insurmountable odds in trying to find loved ones and make a start in a prostate region without any real economic means or many skills that would assist them in this effort. The Southern white population would surely fight them at every step, so any improvement beyond their sudden freedom would depend largely on the benevolence of Northern lawmakers and charitable acts from liberal whites from Northern states heading south to assist them in this massive undertaking. Most states didn’t have a public education system prior to the civil war. The Freedmen’s Bureau was established to help the former slave’s transition into society, it was very crucial to the education system for them. The Bureau established many schools and funded them until the it closed after reconstruction. They freedmen were taught to read and write and many other helpful tasks in their schools. Though with almost the entire population of African Americans in the south needing an education the school were overpopulated and many couldn’t find seats. The English first kidnapped Africans and brought them to Britain to work as slaves in order to gain economic power.
