Jennifer Bussey’s Critical Essay on “Snow Falling on Cedars” analyzes the similarities and differences between Ishmael Chambers of Snow Falling On Cedars, and Ishmael from Moby Dick. To begin her critical essay, Bussey states, “Comparing Ishmael and Ishmael Chambers is important because it shows the reader how Ishmael Chambers’ life could have been different.” Bussey compares the adventures both men took. Ishmael Chambers fought in World War Two, while Ishmael chased a whale. She then goes on to compare their relation to the world claiming, “Both men are essentially alone in the world.” Finally, Bussey contrasts the lives of the two men, arguing that Ishmael from Moby Dick is open to the world, while Ishmael Chambers feels isolated.…

Bre-X Minerals Ltd. faced numerous challenges in 1996, largest among them being the potential loss of the majority stake in property that could yield upwards of 100 million ounces of gold. The Indonesian government was threatening to redistribute ownership of Busang, the mining region in which Bre-X had property rights, due to its fear that Bre-X was a short-term player not serious about extracting the gold or a long term commitment in Indonesia. These fears were justified given Bre-X’s small size (it had a net loss of $Cdn. 366,677 in 1995 compared to a net income of $Cdn. 218 million from Barrick Gold Corp., a potential government-corporate partner) and limited connections within the country (established only in 1993 by exploring in the East Kalimantan rainforest).…

I would recommend Barrick Gold’s top executives back in Toronto to keep supporting the idea of “localizing” their subsidiary in Bolivia, as it could be contribute for their success in a foreign country, and maximize their productivity with the support of the locals. Barrick Gold has to ensure that their expatriate managers understand the details of the Bolivian culture, as it is not similar to the Canadian culture. And this awareness could be accomplished by having someone in the company who is familiar with the Bolivian culture, preferable a local, to educate the expatriate…

“Africa’s Golden Past” was a very interesting article I’ve read. I’ve learned about the different countries in Africa. I’ve learn the many different art forms Africa have for example, languages, of different sorts, wars that occur in our great Motherland, and great achievements of Kings. I learn about different cultures that Africa has to offer. There were many parts of Africa that was very wealthy with gold. After reading through “Africa’s Golden Past” I believe argument point William Leo Hansberry, was telling us readers, The article focuses on the golden past of Africa. Among the earliest states of West Africa that rose to fame and fortune was the Kingdom of Ghana from which the present republic derived its name. In 1240, Sundiata struck at the old city of Ghana and destroyed its forever as a great or potentially great power. In regarding to Old Africa, Hansberry believes that people tends to forget some of the richness empire that Africa had were; Ghana, Mali, Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Songhai. He reminds us that it was the African people who converted the Spanish people into the Islamic faith. He also explains how the Africans founded a civilization more advance of their Christian contemporaries. Later on the Spaniards reconquered and old rulers were order to abandon native customers. Hansberry lets us know it was the Africans that introduce these faiths to the Spaniards, but Spain has been the center of civilization for centuries. What surprised me the most while reading “Africa’s Golden Past” I realized major of the things Africa did they did not get recognition for them. I did not know how rich Africa was especially Ghana. Ghana had many fame and fortune. Ghana civilization and Sudan had many great buildings, code laws, poems, and histories. It had banks, and a very food postal service. I was surprised because we are taught that…

Born and raised in Los Angeles, I am a second generation Armenian immigrant. I consider my Armenian culture essential to my identity, and that has a lot to do with my upbringing. The Armenian population has always been a small minority across the globe and in order for us to maintain our race, we make a conscious effort to keep our culture alive close to our hearts. A key component that unites us as a race is our unique language of Armenian. We are fortunate enough to have maintained our spoken and written language for over two thousand years. In order to teach the language to new generations of Armenians who live in the diaspora here in Los Angeles, several Armenian private schools have been established throughout this city. I was lucky enough to attend this school from pre-school until high school graduation. For the fifteen years that I attended this institution, I had classes every day in both Armenian and English which focused on all aspects of speaking, reading, and writing. Armenian was the main language spoken in most of our households, so as children it was new and exciting to speak English with one another on the playground. Since Armenian was our native language, we spoke with a heavy English accent and mispronounced several words. However, as we continued developing our English speaking skills with each other and advanced in our curriculum, we were exposed to Social Sciences and Math, in which all classes were all taught in English. Speaking Armenian was now an hour of our day at school while the rest was focused on English. This is when I began to consider myself bilingual in Armenian and English. My parents were upset that I started speaking English at home, so speaking Armenian was still heavily emphasized within my family. Now that I attend a university constantly surrounded by non-Armenian speaking people and don’t learn Armenian language skills in class, I find myself only speaking English. However, I believe that my…

The payback period for Bullock Gold Mining in the book does not have a required time period. Usually, a company has a pre-specified length of time as a benchmark. The decision rule is to invest in projects that pay sooner or have a shorter payback period. We calculated the payback period to be 3.96 years which is less than half of the expected duration of the project. To determine 3.96 we added the Present Value of the Cash Flows until we matched the initial investment of $750,000,000. The first three years of the investment totaled $530,000,000. We used 0.96 of the fourth year’s revenues of $230,000,000 to match the remaining balance of $220,000,000. There are some problems with the Payback Method for determining whether a project is preferred. The timing of cash flows within the payback period effects the net present value of a project. The payback method does not discount the cash flows properly. The payments after the payback period are not considered. This problem has an arbitrary standard for the payback period. It is a plus that the project does payback within the eight year lifespan of the project. There are advantages to this approach. It is popular because it is easy to understand the concept and explain to others. It is quick and inexpensive to apply. A project that pays back rapidly probably has a positive NPV.…

The Characteristic of the gold loan product is that the average tenor of the loan is about 90 to 100 days. Investors have found this product attractive with short term tenor. Moreover, the risk involved in the product is less. Gold loan companies offer loan against a LTV (loan to value) ratio of about 75 to 80% which makes it less risky. Any movement of gold prices that makes the value of the security to fall below the loan offered would make the company exercise a margin call or cancel and issue a fresh loan. The sentiments attached with the gold ornaments pledged also makes gold loan less risky…
