Religious Uncertainty A Farewell To Arms is a novel that captivates a reader with a character’s struggle through life, beliefs, and relationships during times of war. Those themes such as love, war, and identity are developed, but one of the key themes of this novel is religious uncertainty. Religious uncertainty is a key theme Hemingway develops through important events of the war, which affect the soul and beliefs of a character, a characters’ loneliness, and through religious symbolism. Religious uncertainty is a key theme. Religious uncertainty can form in a person under certain circumstances and possibly permanently affect one's beliefs. This theme is carefully developed by Hemingway by placing small clues that build up to the bigger idea. In the beginning of the novel, disrespect of religion displays religious uncertainty. A conversation is being held between the major, the lieutenant, and the priest, in which they discuss the priests’ purpose of being there is and their opinions on religion. The major says, “All thinking men are atheists.” (Hemingway 8). The major is disrespecting the priest, and disrespecting religion itself. The war has changed the characters from faithful to unfaithful. The war is constantly present in the characters life by the way they live their lives and how they are shaped. This also incorporates the dichotomy of believers versus non-believers and depicts the cruel and cold reality of the war. This shows that the men at war numb to all feelings. It could be assumed that although the war is not fully shown throughout the novel, the war is always present. The war has shaped the characters in the way that they have difficulty forming relationships and led them to only satisfy their bodily needs. The multiple deaths they see and injuries they receive, influence their beliefs and thoughts. The troops have no other choice but believe there is no way out of this war, and there’s nothing else but to end it. They believe everything

It is his works, such as Hills like White Elephants, which subtly address modern issues that bring forth the question of morality and purpose to a general population (A Farewell to Arms, 3). It is his short, direct style, exemplified by his six word story “Baby shoes for sale, never worn.”, allows for a clear and deep expression of emotion (A Farewell to Arms, 4). His involvement of incorporating the reader through active reading breaks an emotional barrier set forth by usual text. This action allows for the reader to directly examine Hemingway’s characters, and thus reflect on their own behavior. Hemingway’s mastery of language, subsequent to his fluency in the Romantic languages, allows his works to be overall reflective of human behavior and relate to the reader in an emotional context (A Farewell To Arms,…

The concept of heroism in A Farewell to Arms is contested as Hemingway asserted what he defines as the deeds, goals, and the necessity of a hero. Heroism is defined by Hemingway as a character trait which allows the person to abide by a personal code that not only fights for themself, but for those around him. These actions are called into question as the arrogance of other characters, such as Ettore, Bonello, and the engineers, is compared to Henry who seemingly eschewed glory for the sake of protection. This allowed Hemingway to articulate how a hero should act and determine what a hero should base their decisions upon. The gratification of heroism is also put in context as Hemingway challenges what a hero should fight for. Whether they fight for a sense of personal glory and success, or a far more intangible notion, such as happiness. Indeed, Hemingway does define heroism as the ability to abide by a moral code of honour to achieve survival and defend companions in the hope of achieving some form of happiness, a definition made manifest through the protagonist, Frederic Henry. The nature of heroism is not the only theme Hemingway explores here, with the relevance and necessity of bravery in society also up for examination.…

The utmost important aspect of a leader is their ultimate goal, which raises a question. What is my goal as a leader in the various aspects of my life? The ultimate goal for myself as a leader in any group of people is to inspire those I lead. Another way the author shows this appalling theme is through the use of characters. As the soldiers talk, you can see their mood and personalities; ironically this reflects how war has affected their minds and personal lifes. As the story develops you can see how the characters' life changes and how their thought of fear develops inside them. The soldiers manage to get use to the war environment, but they became more cold and less emotional. This ironic aspect expresses violence and death because after a solder has been to war, their whole aspect of life changes.…

Hemingway uses the war era to develop the setting of the story, which helps us understand how life was then. People such as Krebs were summoned to fight a war, commanding them to kill thousands of people in the name of their country, and then return home with that idea that everything is still the same. The setting is affected with the story starting a few years after the war has already been fought, because the reader comes to realize that Krebs’s late coming home is not acknowledged by the townspeople because for them, it is post-war. “His town had heard too many atrocity stories to be thrilled by actualities. Krebs found that to be listened to at all he had to lie” (Hemingway 187) Krebs’s misplacement in the post-war setting is portrayed in the fact that he cannot talk about to anyone, even though he…

It is a common knowledge that war - “the calamity for civilization”, as the narrator Jake names it - disorganises or even destroys human’s inner life, his priorities, his code of values; that war causes a lot of chaos in the way one perceives oneself as well as others; that war deprives man of dignity and (self-)respect. The lives of the (dis)affiliates of the Lost Generation, who have gone through the tragedy of the World War1, epitomise this universal truth. They are constantly coping with finding themselves in the world after the war. It is highly probable that the ethics and morality for them is to be found in the book of…

Throughout the story, All Quiet on the Western Front can be classified in many themes that befits the novel written by Erich Maria Remarque. The journey includes how people changed their definition of war, correlating to what they experienced, a taste of how it felt, feeling as if it changed them mentally and physically. Before and after the war, the experiences gained affected them, throughout the whole novel as the theme of identity appears, defining the concept of war. As if words are not enough to express how war changed who the soldiers were, and their way of life, who they identified with during war changed previous teachings through experience. Not only how the soldiers would identify themselves as, but the identification of who was the enemy makes them question the reason of war. The novel caused the main character to question who he has become as well as the reasons why wars must be fought throughout the experience he faces.…

I am a very pleasant individual who like to make people feel as welcomed, especially to a new environment, as much as possible. When a person enters any residence halls, the first person they see is that of the Guest Relations Associate. It is imperitive that they provide an atmosphere that will be welcoming, warm and pleasant so the host could feel comfortable. I am interested in this position because I love to be that person that makes the first impression. I have been involved in a lot of things that will allow me to be a good candidate for this position. I have been an usher at my church from I was 14. I always enjoyed it because I love to greet and welcome people. Also, I think my smile is one that one cannot resist. I am confident in myself and my school so I know I would not stuggle to welcome others. It is important that the Guest Relations Associates make good ethical decisions and act as a positive role model, not only in the residence halls, but on the campus as a whole because they are a representation of what the University of Bridgeport is like. They are to be polite, respectful and provide a high level of customer service and I think I have what it takes to provide that for my school.
