The first type; Agape or true love is experienced between the narrator and his wife Razia. This is shown because they both selflessly love each other. They worked hard to ensure that their love would continue by Razia fighting with her father for the right to marry the narrator. There is also no thought of ever splitting up, which shows that the love is unconditional. This type of love is only experienced by the lucky.…
I have been married for eighteen years and have found that even though I have experienced several different styles of love throughout my relationship, only a couple still stand out. We have always possessed a friendship love, where our friendship aside from intimacy is very strong. We started our relationship as friends…
The Four Loves, authored by British novelist C.S. Lewis, is often viewed as one of the best books written on the subject of love as it pertains to religion. In the book, Lewis covers many ideas including the four types of love which include: storgé (empathetic love/affection), philia love (the love between friends), Eros (erotic/romantic love), and Agapé (the unconditional ‘God’ love). In this book, Lewis also covers the differences between need and gift love; however, one of the most astounding statements that Lewis makes is in the storgé passage, specifically in the section about affection where he states, “Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our natural lives.” (pg. 53). Lewis also states, "The highest does not stand without the lowest. (pg.9) If affection is part of storgé, which is considered the lowest love, then to obtain the higher loves one must have affection. Furthermore, storgé (commonly referred to as affection) creates stamina in natural relations between people due precisely to that low-level nature it…

Quickdraw is a poem about the end and break down of a relationship. Specifically an argument between the speaker and their other half and the feelings felt by the speaker in the poem. It has many similarities and differences with In Paris with You a poem about a very negative relationship with the speaker who is desperately in love with someone who is just using them. The poem uses a play on words and anytime the words Paris and love are mentioned you have to switch them, so Paris means love and love means Paris. These poems have similarities and difference and these can be explored through language techniques and key themes.…
The theme that is portrayed throughout The Great Gatsby would be a deviant sense of love. Even though Tom and Daisy may seem somewhat loyal and affectionate towards each other in the beginning, their true feelings begin to show as the novel develops. As we see with their unfaithfulness to each other, they are clearly not in love. Tom begins seeing Myrtle, George’s wife, and Daisy has an affair with Gatsby, her former lover. Ever since Gatsby had laid eyes on Daisy, he’d wanted to be with her which is why he, “bought that house so that Daisy would just be across the bay.” (Fitzgerald.78) It’s largely evident that Gatsby is in love, but with what? With Daisy? Or with a dream of Daisy? He’s always had fantasies about loving Daisy, but now that…
F. Scott Fitzgerald presents many themes in his novel, The Great Gatsby. A theme Fitzgerald used was love and how it affects everybody around one another. This theme is expressed throughout the book by how the energy changes when one doesn’t like another person they are with. The motif of weather shows when a relationship is a little unclear it rains and when there is tension it becomes very hot. The first reference showing the connection between the weather and love was “Some weather!...Hot!...Hot!...Hot!...Is it hot enough for you?”(Fitzgerald 115). This presents that…
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and selected love sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett Browning explore texts which involve versions in varying frameworks through the experience of idealised love, hope and mortality. The interpretations of Barrett Browning and Fitzgerald explore many differences throughout both texts with the use of symbolism, imagery, and irony to emphasise difference time makes upon values and ideals. The Great Gatsby set during the Jazz age is a representation of the failure and tragedy of the American Dream as well as the fragmented world where love struggles to survive. Contrasted to Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s love sonnets set in the beginning of the era of dreamers, making the sonnets typically Victorian with their…

The Romantics looked to nature as a liberating force, a source of sensual pleasure, moral instruction, religious insight, and artistic inspiration. Eloquent exponents of these ideals, they extolled the mystical powers of nature and argued for more sympathetic styles of garden design in books, manuscripts, and drawings now regarded as core documents of the Romantic Movement. Their cult of inner beauty and their view of the outside world dominated European thought during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.…
