3) Outline and briefly evaluate the view that agencies of socialisation create marginalised ethnic identities. (24 marks)

Socialisation is the process individuals go through when learning the culture of their social group. There are lots of agencies that take part in socialising an individual including education, religion and the media. I will explain how some of these agencies contribute to create marginalised ethnic identities. These are people of minority background whose personality has been side-lined for being different.

Education is the agency that a child is first in contact with after the family so it’s a form of secondary socialisation. Gillborn studied the formal curriculum in the UK. This is what is learnt about subjects in lessons. He found that it is ethnocentric and biased toward a white British point of view. His theory was based on evidence from the 80s therefore changes have occurred since and system has developed. He found that it created an inferiority feeling for ethnic groups as well as making their culture seem inferior. An example is learning about Britain’s contribution to World War Two in History and its other achievements. However, Gillborn is accused of overstating ethnocentrism and fails to account for individuals being taught their ethnic history through religious based education or just at home through the family.

Sewell examined the influence of peer groups in socialising young people.. He observed how young black boys acquired a black masculine anti-school culture where they took part in deviant criminal behaviour. This was only a very small group of student so cannot be generalised to the whole population. Nonetheless, he found that the anti-school culture acted as a cultural comfort zone to retreat away from the perceived racism of the school. Sewell not proving that the school was racist in any fashion which questions his findings as perceived racism.
