AGGRESSIVE DOGS 2

Aggressive Dogs The “Big Idea” that I chose to write about is Aggressive Dogs. The thesis statement that I have chosen is “Oweners are responisble for canine aggression, due to the fact of how the train and raise their animal”. I will be mainly focusing on pit bull dogs. We can solve this problem
(and raise awarness) through educating pit bull owners. I think the thesis statement works good with the topic due to the research that I have conducted. Though some people may disagree I think my thesis statement is strong and effective. With the research that has been conducted there is a solution to dog aggression. I will develop an effective argument to support my claim about misconceptions of the pit bull breed. As I do further research I will continue to search for reliable sources from different sites including but not limited to: peta.org, aspca.org, ambassdorpitbulls.org, absolutek9.com, and animalplanet.com. Some illutrations that I may use will be images of an aggressive dog being praised by his owner after a vicious fatality over another dog. Many dog owners don’t understand the serious of aggression. If I was to submit this proposal to all the animal shelters, veterinarian, and all the pit bull owners I would say there is no such thing as a dog being born aggressive. A dog is like a child, it needs to be taught right from wrong. I think it is wrong to try to ban one type of dog because of the misconception of the breed. The owners of the pit bull know the consequences of raising and training a dog to be viscous but still some people chose to still do it. The only people raising these kinds of dogs in my opinion is people who are criminals, gang members, and people selling drugs. Unless you plan of breaking the law there is no other reason to train or make a dog aggressive. This type of behavior will or can hurt you or your animal.

According to statistical data posted on Barkpost.com, pit bulls are the #1 shelter intake dog and the #1 most frequently euthanized dog in shelters for no other reason than overcrowding. Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in this country and of those 1.2 million, approximately 40% of them are pit bulls (Moore). Only 1 in every 600 pit bulls in this country will find a loving home (Prasad). Advocates, rescue groups, shelters and animal rights groups like the ASPCA are likely unable to be completely objective when it comes to these dogs who they often see abused, mistreated and dumped at their shelters only to ultimately die due to overcrowding. The emotional toll these workers must endure is unimaginable. However, as a pit bull owner myself, I worry when an uninformed or neutral audience is not given the full picture on something like the responsibility of caring for such a controversial pet. I cringe when I see pit bull puppies intentionally misidentified as “easier” breeds such as Labrador retrievers or boxer mixes in an attempt to find homes for less adoptable puppies labeled as pit bulls. I myself, was led to believe by my rescue group that I was adopting a vizsla mix puppy. As the owner of a purebred vizsla, I…

As indicated by Animal People, it is assessed around 60% of the pit-bulls that touch base to safe houses are murdered for different distinctive reasons, for example, animosity, sickness, or packed safe houses. Pit-bulls are the main breed spoke to in the willful extermination rooms with animosity being the main source in the matter of why pit bulls are euthanized, yet hostility can undoubtedly be maintained a strategic distance from through appropriate preparing and look after the canine (Clifton, Animal People Online). Over the past half-century, the reputation of pit bulls has grown gradually worse. The breed that once represented America’s dedication and determination on recruitment advertisements is now “a status symbol in drug and gang culture” (Reed, 2008). This trend can be traced back to the 1980s when dog-fighting attracted widespread media publicity. Since then, reports of pit bull attacks has significantly increased, and these breeds are labeled as vicious killers, restricted by the society’s stereotypes. As a result, this topic has stirred up controversy as to whether or not a pit bull ban is an effective way to reduce and prevent more dog attacks in a specific area.…

Natalie Lima, an animals rights advocate created a whole novel about how the Breed- specific legislation ban creates more issues including the state losing money, the shelters being packed, bite rate not going down, and people would move on to a different “fighting breed”. The other main issue of banning Pit bulls is that dog fighting is presently illegal yet it still happens, therefore, it would pull Pit breeds away from loving family homes and put them in dangerous homes that will abuse their…

Due to irresponsible owners, Pit Bulls have been labeled cruel and violent animals, leading people to be frightened for themselves, their children, and their pets. By experience and owning a pit bull for oneself, people would begin to understand something entirely different. Pit Bulls are a misunderstood breed; they are one of the most loving and loyal breeds that deserves a fair chance just like any other dog would, but because of irresponsible owners, and their negligence toward teaching their pit bulls the right mannerisms this may never happen.…

Pit bulls and terrier breeds were created in early 19th century, for the popular spectator sports of bull- and bear-baiting. In 1898 the UKC, Britain's equivalent of the AKC, named these bull dogs the American Pit Bull Terrier. The AKC decided to recognize the breed in the early 1930s--but under a new name. Intending to separate it from its pit-fighting past, the AKC named it the American Staffordshire terrier, also known as a pit bull. These dogs have been used for protection not only in homes but in war, with the police and even with celebrities. Unfortunately, this same breed of dog now has a bad reputation, being called a vicious breed of dog and bully’s. I would have to disagree though, I believe that yes, there are some very mean pit bulls out there but there are also very nice and even famous ones. Not all pit bulls can be bad they aren’t born that way, they are raised that way. Saying a pit bull is born aggressive is kind of like saying a baby is born to hate.…

Moving right along, Pit-bulls haven’t always had the bad reputation they have today. Over the years, other dogs have been blamed for “dangerous” and “ruthless” acts. In the 70’s, the Dobermans were blamed. In the 80’s it was the German Shepard’s turn. Next, in the 90’s, Rottweiler’s committed the crime. Now it’s the Pit-bulls turn, and people are going against them head-on, and all I can say is that they are barking up the wrong tree. Blaming dogs for the wrong-doings of humans is inhumane itself.…
