What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?

Ageism is a form of discrimination and prejudice, particularly experienced by seniors. Most seniors are mentally and physically active regardless of age with a great deal to contribute. http://www.alfa.org/alfa/Ageism.asp

Ageism influences the presence of diversity because those who are affected by ageism within their career may lose their job due to newer, younger, cheaper people coming into the workplace to take over their current position. Which may leave those who are older without proper insurance to take care of their aging bodies which could result in earlier deaths and a lack of diversity in the world. Also when the younger generation takes over positions in the workplace that workplace will have a lack of diversity as well. http://www.studymode.com/essays/Eth125-R8-Disability-Diversity-1534126.html

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967, as amended, seeks to address the long standing problem of age discrimination in the workplace. On March 30, 2012, the EEOC published its final ruling on reasonable factor other than age which took effect on April 30th 2012. An example of an employment practice based on a reasonable factor other than age is a physical fitness test. Obviously this type of test would likely put older applicants at a disadvantage but if the employer could prove that it was a legitimate business purpose for the individual to pass such a test they would be allowed to do so without reprimand.…

Age: the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) protects those ages 40 and over, it does not protect those under 40. Employers may favor an older worker over a younger worker, even if both are 40 or over. Issues may arise, though, when both the individual making the hire and the applicant are over age 40. Examples of age-based bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ) are mandatory retirement ages for air traffic controllers [56, exceptions to 61] and airline pilots [65].…

The Age Discrimination Act of 2006 is legislation passed by the UK parliament in London. It is intended to discourage ageism in the workplace; in other words, the discrimination against persons on the basis of their age. Instead, all employment decisions must be passed on competencies and skills. The retirement age in the UK is 65. Under the 2006 Act, workers have the right to request to continue working beyond the retirement age. Employers must honor this request unless there are legitimate reasons to insist on retirement. Employers must follow a particular procedure when considering a request to continue working beyond the retirement age, or risk consequences.…

Ageism is age based prejudice or discrimination. The effects of stereotyping on the older generations, whether intentional or not has a negative impact of diversity in society. When society determines that a person is too old to do their job or maintain their effectiveness as active members of society we are losing a great deal of experience and wisdom and inhibiting a person from doing something they may want to do. Age discrimination will have a negative impact not only on society but also on employers as they will not be able to retain knowledge and will have to pour resources into training new workers. A possible solution is to maintain an older workforce to provide mentoring and training opportunities.…
