In addictions counseling, the spiritual life review could be used as a definite resource to implement better services for the elderly. Older adults comprise one of the fastest growing demographics in the United States today, and are also described as the most spiritual and religious of all the age groups. (Lewis, 2001, p. 231) However, counselors need to be careful when it come to intermingling religious and spiritual beliefs to their clients. Spirituality and aging are two concepts that go hand in hand for most patients. As we get older, our spirituality increases. This is true because as an adult ages, they tend to look for the deeper meaning and purpose of life. It is a unique part of aging that is hard to put into exact words due to the fact that it cannot be measured like a pathology or aging process. As an older adult approaches death, it is normal for them to be reflecting back on what their lives truly meant. Spirituality also helps patients to cope with situations, death, and can become a source of hope to them. The most important population trend is aging. This is a disaster in the healthcare system. More and more people are getting older and are need of healthcare. Aging is not only important but it has a major impact on the organization and delivery in healthcare. One particular importance that will affect the financing and delivery is the shift from acute to chronic illnesses. Rather than acute illnesses, the focus will be on diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and osteoporosis (William & Torren, 2008). First, there will have to be a plan to change the style of treatment to an ongoing process. Second, there will have to be a financial plan set in place for disabilities, like long-term facilities such as nursing homes, home health,…

My perception of the older adult has been somewhat influenced by society. Society's view is that older people need special treatment because of their poor health, lack of income, or because they lack social support. Therefore, they feel that the older adult needs extra help. At times I do feel the same way, but my view is more geared to what is called "compassionate stereotyping". This stereotype attempts to create sympathy for older people, but it doesn't give a true picture of later life. See, what society and I fail to realize about people 65 and older is that while they may begin to develop physical or other limitations, they learn to live with them and lead happy and productive lives.…

Due to the natural evolution of life, as humans age, different things began to happen to the body that are hard to stop. One unusual physiological process would be the wear-and-tear theory of aging. This theory sheds light to the idea that once we are born, our bodies began working on our behalf. As we utilize our body for our daily needs, we damage it in the process. As years go on, you sprain your ankles, cut your hand, break an arm, destroy joints, etc. In my younger years, football was my sport of choice. Throughout the few years I played football is when I think I did the most damage to my body, such as ripping skin off my arms, breaking my toes, spraining my wrist, hurting my back, and jamming my thumbs. These things cause my body to…
