You trust nursing homes to treat your loved ones with quality care, but what could happen behind closed doors still causes anxiety. In 1986, these fears came to fruition when Congress requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) evaluate the quality of nursing homes. They found that a majority of residents were often neglected, abused, and inadequately cared for. To solve these issues, the IOM proposed a series of reforms that were brought into action the following year — known as the Nursing Home Reform Act.…

Americans are living longer than ever before thanks to advancements in medical technology, diet, and treatments. For many, this means entering assisted care as they age. Some may have disabilities that prevent from living on their own. Often times, the family that would care for them at a healthier time in their life can not provide the constant medical assistance needed. Many have family members that entrust a professional organization such a nursing home to provide this care. Most nursing homes are compassionate and responsible places that properly look after their patients. However, there are some that fail to provide the care needed and neglect the conditions of the patients, and even expose them to harm and mistreatment. Often people look at nursing homes as a place where older adults go to live out their final days, I honestly believe this is the way society perceives nursing homes because of how older adults were cared for in the past. According to the book Community Care for an aging society. “Since the colonial period, the primary provider for the care of the elderly adults has been family.” (pg.42) (Cox) An older adult having to go to a nursing home does not necessarily mean that they are going there to live out their final days. Times have changed over the years and sometimes it is no longer an option for family to take on caring for an elderly parent or family member. From my own experience of working in a nursing home I have witnessed many older adults who are very capable of doing most ADL’s on their own given the opportunity to do so. We also know that this is not the case for some older adults residing in a nursing facility, some are incapacitated and some may be in the care of hospice.…
