The symbolism in this short story gives it a deeper meaning and makes it more powerful. For example, “All my dreams and fantasies had been strangled with a phone wire” (16), doesn’t mean that they were literally strangled by the wire, but instead, because her relationship with Paul ended over the phone, it symbolizes an end to all her dreams and hopes for the future. Another example of symbolism, is Golden Boy, according to the poem Maddy read about Saint Agnes, he…

Jennie Dixiannas’ act starts when she ascends the rope to get to the top of the hippodrome, similarly this process shows that from a young age she has had a hard time relating with others in society due to the psychological scaring done from past events. “First, she climbed a rope, which slithered snake like between and around her legs as she rose higher”(28). Ever since her mother bled out while giving birth and passed away it has been a struggle for Jennie to accept it so she just tries to put it in the back of her mind and distract herself from the haunting scene of her mother dying. The rope symbolizes as a snake which slithers between and around her legs. Furthermore, this portion of the act indicates the beginning of the endless raping done by her father after her mother passed away. As a result, she had to adjust to the way things were which was a lot for a 6 year old child. Similarly, “Jennie became a walking phantom, the living receptacle of unlived lives” (33). This example illustrates’ how hard it was for her to deal with the hardships of living in the real world with nobody to help her with her problems.…
The Battle began after Captain Benjamin Church leads his men into an ambush. While merely a handful of men died Church began to use this as a tale to preach in hopes of creating a nationalist community sparking from a common enemy. The story of how the natives would dismember and decapitate the dead left on the battlefield without a proper Catholic burial. Appalled by the stories of Church the Puritans began demanding that bodies be given a proper burial. This proved very difficult as the retrieval of the dead was the perfect set up for an ambush. If one was lucky enough and no ambush was made bodies would be hastily buried on the battlefield. This was a rarity as most bodies had been scavenged and as the customs of a proper burial took too…
Hannah Kent, in Burial Rites and Billie August in Les Miserables explore a variety of injustices as a product of prejudice by revealing the flaws of their Nineteenth Century social system. Although Kent released her novel in the 21st century, she thoroughly presents Nineteenth Century Iceland in all its formidable culture of prejudice and hardship to the same extent that August explores Nineteenth Century France in Les Miserables. Though both authors propose that one’s preconception of another rests in the position of their social class, August presents that as one’s social class changes, the prejudice changes towards them changes. This is different to Kent as she entices the readers to see the nature of men and their prejudice towards women…
My political viewpoint has changed dramatically since I was first introduced to politics. I come from a democratic family, where it is strongly believed that it is the government’s responsibility to care for all people and that the government knows what is best for all people. Every voting season, my parents vote for a democratic president and explain to me the reasoning behind their decision. It was not until I was in the tenth grade that I realized that I did not hold the same political beliefs as my parents. After taking several political quizzes and extensively researching the bevy of political parties, I now know that I am an independent. What is an independent? An independent is an individual politician not affiliated to any political…
In ‘when the wasp drowned’ and ‘the darkness out there’ the theme of death is presented within the characters and the twisted storyline. A number of techniques such as symbolism, tone and narrative are used to portray these themes to the reader. In ‘when the wasps drowned’ Eveline is portrayed as being mature and protective over her siblings and more importantly the truth of the ring. In ‘the darkness out there’ Mrs Rutter is at first seen to be a typical old lady who has a dark secret. Within both stories there is a strong contrast of characterisation and the overall voice of the story which can create an impact on the reader in different ways, also in both stories there is a lot of similarities and contrasts of how this is presented.…
The first two chapters of “When a Jew Dies” expresses multiples of Jewish terms that symbolizes actions, state of mind, and even procedures of Jewish death. I chose these two because this is a way of introducing the difference and are the reason behind the thoughts of the rush burial of a Jew. The deep reliance on the church, rabbi, and community is also interested and what I think is so crucial, which is the fact of the fast burial after death.…

The prevalence and description of death and deathbed scenes and its importance as a plot device is omnipresent to nineteenth-century literature. Death was everywhere and mortality rates were high, especially in children, not all parents expected their children to survive their early years (Da Sousa Correa, p.10). Additionally, maternal death rates were high with women dying, often leaving the baby, and other children in the family with a widowed husband. Thus, authors often used the death of a child to stress the importance of innocence and the value of childhood; the author often expressing the sole reason of a child dying was that they would pass to a better world. For example, nineteenth-century England was in the midst of social and economic…
2. Suzanne is portrayed by Denis Diderot as a young girl. The young girls were supposed to be innocent and worked well to make the stories. The young soul is deprived of pleasure in her life. It would be unacceptable that the fate among innocent young girls. Sexual harassment one mother superior subjects her to pass and is unnoticed until to Suzanne until the priest bring it to her attention that the cuddles and cares had the mark of evil on them. Suzanne lives in scenes known as amidst that can be like horror films, cruelty, and madness. There would be only a little love and that can be sinful or furtive. The two souls are able to help her. She isn’t hopeful I would say she is hopeless and alone in a dreadful place where female’s souls are…
Both the plot of the play and the author’s personal experience successfully demonstrate that the theme of the play is the sin of human existence. First, the theme is illustrated by Agnes’s gradual recognition of humanity. Agnes respectively gets in touch with different people including the Officer, the Lawyer, the Doorkeeper and the Poet. These characters represent their different social roles, which collectively create the symbol of humanity. As Agnes gradually understands these people, she accepts the truth that humanity’s reality is the endless repetition of “duty and sin and guilt” (Nectoux). Second, Strindberg weaved his own life experiences into the play. According to the director’s note, Strindberg’s dream of marital happiness was momentarily crushed when his wife left home forever. The play was written in the autumn of 1901, after Strindberg suffered being alone for forty days (Hedström). Because of Strindberg’s unfortunate experiences, he regarded his nightmarish vision of humankind’s plight as real life and reached the conclusion that human existence is evil.…
