“Show Me The Money” Summer Survivor 2005 Program. University of Minnesota Extension Service. Day One: Where Does the Money Come From? (Earning Income) Source: Financial Fitness for Life, ©National Council on Economic Education

Session 1 Where Does The Money Come From? (Earning Income) Lesson Plan
Objectives: At the end of this lesson youth will be able to: • Relate human capital (work skills) to work • Define money earned as income • Differentiate between money received as income and money received as a gift • Identify ways to earn income

Background Information: People receive money in several ways. Earning money by working is a common one. When working, individuals use their work skills, talents, and abilities (human capital) in a productive way. Another way people receive money is through gifts. In many instances, the money given by the giver was income to him/her. This lesson focuses on the differences between the two sources of money and on human capital as it is related to work.

Supplies Needed: • $5.00 bills (play money) – one for each child • A large torch for class use with a flame “earning money” that will be attached at the end of the lesson. • Supplies to make individual torches for each child. • Copy of the story #1 “A Very Good Day” -- one for the large group or multiple copies if read in smaller groups • Flip chart or white board and markers • Strips of construction paper in 3 colors (approximately 3 strips of each color for each student)

One aspect of this program involved widespread government aid being pumped into the region. One county in the Tennessee Valley reports “$60,000 [for] state aid” and “$51,000 [for] federal aid”. Along with pumping money into counties, the government’s demonstration farms served as propaganda. People were meant to model their farms after the “perfect” government-approved way. “Critics saw mostly manipulation in this approach” of educational outreach, however.…

The center seems misplaced in the city of Missoula, with the hundred acres of pastures, fields, and livestock. Wildeboer is most interested in agriculture, he has a background with ten years in 4H and he decided to join Future Farmers of America as the next step in his career. Kiersten Separ who’s known Wildeboer since third grade stated, “ He’s wholeheartedly, passionate, and dedicated to 4H,” he’s always involved with traveling and leadership opportunities that 4H provides, “[Wildeboer] is a State Ambassador, but he also has a lot of small level impacts in the organization.” He also attends the Agriculture Education class at Bigsky High school. According to the USDA 41% of Americans were involved in agriculture in 1900. Today, “less than two percent of Americans are farmers,” says Wildeboer, he hopes to make an impact on an agriculture level within the community. Agriculture education has taught him more real world experiences than in any classroom due to traveling and hands on community…

Their first baby, a daughter, was born in January 1922, when my mother was 26 years old. The second baby, a son, was born in March 1923. They were renting farms; my father, besides working his own fields, also was a hired man for two other farmers. They had no capital initially, and had to gain it slowly, working from dawn until midnight every day. My town-bred mother learned to set hens and raise chickens, feed pigs, milk cows, plant and harvest a garden, and can every fruit and vegetable she could scrounge. She carried water nearly a quarter of a mile from the well to fill her wash boilers in order to do her laundry on a scrub board. She learned to shuck grain, feed threshers, shuck and husk corn, feed corn pickers. In September 1925, the third baby came, and in June 1927, the fourth child – both daughters. In 1930, my parents had enough money to buy their own farm, and that March they moved all their livestock and belongings themselves, 55 miles over rutted, muddy…
