The AIDS Crisis and College Policy
Communities in our society are becoming increasingly aware of the challenges being presented by the AIDS crisis. Our government, as well as many other organizations, is taking strides to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Recently, in an attempt to contribute to the fight, the College Administration of my local college, Camden County College, has made the decision to install condom dispensers in the college’s rest rooms. While this decision has been met with a great deal of resistance and controversy throughout the campus, I believe it to be one of the many steps needed to provide a safe community for students and also to raise the college community’s awareness of the infection. The vision of Camden County College states the following:
“All who study, visit, or work at our three campus locations will find comfortable, safe, and attractive settings that are designed to sustain a vibrant community characterized by imaginative teaching, caring student services, energetic management, and collegial discussion of diverse ideas and opinions” (2005). According to this statement, the college is declaring that it will provide a safe setting; which, by definition of safe, means free from risk and affording protection. While the vision of the college does not state the limitations to which the college will provide a safe setting, it can be assumed that this statement is all inclusive; and therefore, includes sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV/AIDS. In addition, the vision of the college also states a safe community will be provided by caring student services. In order for the college to maintain and uphold this vision, it can be argued that installing condom dispensers is just one of the many ways the college can be sure to provide both a safe setting and a caring student service.
In addition, the AIDS Education
